Lokasutta The World

Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œLokassa, bhikkhave, samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca desessāmi. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the origin and ending of the world.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œKatamo ca, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo? ā€œAnd what, mendicants, is the origin of the world?

CakkhuƱca paį¹­icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso. Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; Contact is a condition for feeling.

vedanāpaccayā taį¹‡hā; Feeling is a condition for craving.

taį¹‡hāpaccayā upādānaį¹; Craving is a condition for grasping.

upādānapaccayā bhavo; Grasping is a condition for continued existence.

bhavapaccayā jāti; Continued existence is a condition for rebirth.

jātipaccayā jarāmaraį¹‡aį¹ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti. Rebirth is a condition for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo. This is the origin of the world.

SotaƱca paį¹­icca sadde ca ā€¦peā€¦ Ear consciousness arises dependent on the ear and sounds. ā€¦

ghānaƱca paį¹­icca gandhe ca ā€¦ Nose consciousness arises dependent on the nose and smells. ā€¦

jivhaƱca paį¹­icca rase ca ā€¦ Tongue consciousness arises dependent on the tongue and tastes. ā€¦

kāyaƱca paį¹­icca phoį¹­į¹­habbe ca ā€¦ Body consciousness arises dependent on the body and touches. ā€¦

manaƱca paį¹­icca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso. Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā ā€¦peā€¦ Contact is a condition for feeling. ā€¦

jātipaccayā jarāmaraį¹‡aį¹ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti. Rebirth is a condition for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa samudayo. This is the origin of the world.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, lokassa atthaį¹…gamo? And what is the ending of the world?

CakkhuƱca paį¹­icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso. Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; Contact is a condition for feeling.

vedanāpaccayā taį¹‡hā. Feeling is a condition for craving.

Tassāyeva taį¹‡hāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho; When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases.

upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho ā€¦peā€¦ When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, lokassa atthaį¹…gamo. This is the ending of the world.
