Ƒātikasutta At Ƒātika

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā Ʊātike viharati giƱjakāvasathe. At one time the Buddha was staying at Ƒātika in the brick house.

Atha kho bhagavā rahogato paį¹­isallāno imaį¹ dhammapariyāyaį¹ abhāsi: Then while the Buddha was in private retreat he spoke this exposition of the teaching:

ā€œCakkhuƱca paį¹­icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso. ā€œEye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā, Contact is a condition for feeling.

vedanāpaccayā taį¹‡hā; Feeling is a condition for craving.

taį¹‡hāpaccayā upādānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ Craving is a condition for grasping. ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

SotaƱca paį¹­icca sadde ca ā€¦peā€¦ Ear consciousness arises dependent on the ear and sounds. ā€¦

ghānaƱca paį¹­icca gandhe ca ā€¦ Nose consciousness arises dependent on the nose and smells. ā€¦

jivhaƱca paį¹­icca rase ca ā€¦ Tongue consciousness arises dependent on the tongue and tastes. ā€¦

kāyaƱca paį¹­icca phoį¹­į¹­habbe ca ā€¦ Body consciousness arises dependent on the body and touches. ā€¦

manaƱca paį¹­icca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso. Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; Contact is a condition for feeling.

vedanāpaccayā taį¹‡hā; Feeling is a condition for craving.

taį¹‡hāpaccayā upādānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ Craving is a condition for grasping. ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

CakkhuƱca paį¹­icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso. Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; Contact is a condition for feeling.

vedanāpaccayā taį¹‡hā. Feeling is a condition for craving.

Tassāyeva taį¹‡hāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho; When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases.

upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho ā€¦peā€¦ When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

Tassāyeva taį¹‡hāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho; When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases.

upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho ā€¦peā€¦ When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotÄ«ā€ti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.ā€

Tena kho pana samayena aƱƱataro bhikkhu bhagavato upassuti į¹­hito hoti. Now at that time a certain monk was standing listening in on the Buddha.

Addasā kho bhagavā taį¹ bhikkhuį¹ upassuti į¹­hitaį¹. The Buddha saw him

Disvāna taį¹ bhikkhuį¹ etadavoca: and said,

ā€œassosi no tvaį¹, bhikkhu, imaį¹ dhammapariyāyanā€ti? ā€œMonk, did you hear that exposition of the teaching?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œUggaį¹‡hāhi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, imaį¹ dhammapariyāyaį¹; ā€œLearn that exposition of the teaching,

pariyāpuį¹‡Ähi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, imaį¹ dhammapariyāyaį¹; memorize it,

dhārehi tvaį¹, bhikkhu, imaį¹ dhammapariyāyaį¹. and remember it.

Atthasaį¹hito ayaį¹, bhikkhu, dhammapariyāyo ādibrahmacariyakoā€ti. That exposition of the teaching is beneficial and relates to the fundamentals of the spiritual life.ā€
