AƱƱatarabrāhmaį¹‡asutta A Certain Brahmin

Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho aƱƱataro brāhmaį¹‡o yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavatā saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

ā€œKiį¹ nu kho, bho gotama, so karoti so paį¹­isaį¹vedayatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œWorthy Gotama, does the person who does the deed experience the result?ā€

ā€œā€˜So karoti so paį¹­isaį¹vedayatÄ«ā€™ti kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, ayameko antoā€. ā€œā€˜The person who does the deed experiences the resultā€™: this is one extreme, brahmin.ā€

ā€œKiį¹ pana, bho gotama, aƱƱo karoti, aƱƱo paį¹­isaį¹vedayatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œThen does one person do the deed and another experience the result?ā€

ā€œā€˜AƱƱo karoti, aƱƱo paį¹­isaį¹vedayatÄ«ā€™ti kho, brāhmaį¹‡a, ayaį¹ dutiyo anto. ā€œā€˜One person does the deed and another experiences the resultā€™: this is the second extreme.

Ete te, brāhmaį¹‡a, ubho ante anupagamma majjhena tathāgato dhammaį¹ deseti: Avoiding these two extremes, the Realized One teaches by the middle way:

ā€˜avijjāpaccayā saį¹…khārā; ā€˜Ignorance is a condition for choices.

saį¹…khārapaccayā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ Choices are a condition for consciousness. ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saį¹…khāranirodho; When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease.

saį¹…khāranirodhā ā€¦peā€¦ When choices cease ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotÄ«ā€™ā€ti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.ā€™ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, so brāhmaį¹‡o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, the brahmin said to the Buddha,

ā€œabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā€¦

upāsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāį¹‡upetaį¹ saraį¹‡aį¹ gatanā€ti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā€
