AƱƱatarabrÄhmaį¹asutta A Certain Brahmin
SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
Atha kho aƱƱataro brÄhmaį¹o yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
āKiį¹ nu kho, bho gotama, so karoti so paį¹isaį¹vedayatÄ«āti? āWorthy Gotama, does the person who does the deed experience the result?ā
āāSo karoti so paį¹isaį¹vedayatÄ«āti kho, brÄhmaį¹a, ayameko antoā. āāThe person who does the deed experiences the resultā: this is one extreme, brahmin.ā
āKiį¹ pana, bho gotama, aƱƱo karoti, aƱƱo paį¹isaį¹vedayatÄ«āti? āThen does one person do the deed and another experience the result?ā
āāAƱƱo karoti, aƱƱo paį¹isaį¹vedayatÄ«āti kho, brÄhmaį¹a, ayaį¹ dutiyo anto. āāOne person does the deed and another experiences the resultā: this is the second extreme.
Ete te, brÄhmaį¹a, ubho ante anupagamma majjhena tathÄgato dhammaį¹ deseti: Avoiding these two extremes, the Realized One teaches by the middle way:
āavijjÄpaccayÄ saį¹
khÄrÄ; āIgnorance is a condition for choices.

khÄrapaccayÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ ā¦peā¦ Choices are a condition for consciousness. ā¦
evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.
AvijjÄya tveva asesavirÄganirodhÄ saį¹
khÄranirodho; When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease.

khÄranirodhÄ ā¦peā¦ When choices cease ā¦
evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotÄ«āāti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.āā
Evaį¹ vutte, so brÄhmaį¹o bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, the brahmin said to the Buddha,
āabhikkantaį¹, bho gotama, abhikkantaį¹, bho gotama ā¦peā¦ āExcellent, worthy Gotama! Excellent! ā¦
upÄsakaį¹ maį¹ bhavaį¹ gotamo dhÄretu ajjatagge pÄį¹upetaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gatanāti. From this day forth, may the worthy Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.ā
