āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, pokkharaį¹Ä« paƱƱÄsayojanÄni ÄyÄmena paƱƱÄsayojanÄni vitthÄrena paƱƱÄsayojanÄni ubbedhena, puį¹į¹Ä udakassa samatittikÄ kÄkapeyyÄ. āMendicants, suppose there was a lotus pond that was fifty leagues long, fifty leagues wide, and fifty leagues deep, full to the brim so a crow could drink from it.
Tato puriso kusaggena udakaį¹ uddhareyya. Then a person would pick up some water on the tip of a blade of grass.
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?
katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹, yaį¹ vÄ kusaggena udakaį¹ ubbhataį¹ yaį¹ vÄ pokkharaį¹iyÄ udakanāti? Which is more: the water on the tip of the blade of grass, or the water in the lotus pond?ā
āEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹, yadidaį¹ pokkharaį¹iyÄ udakaį¹. āSir, the water in the lotus pond is certainly more.
Appamattakaį¹ kusaggena udakaį¹ ubbhataį¹. The water on the tip of a blade of grass is tiny.
Neva satimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti na sahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti na satasahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti pokkharaį¹iyÄ udakaį¹ upanidhÄya kusaggena udakaį¹ ubbhatanāti. Compared to the water in the lotus pond, itās not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part.ā
āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvakassa diį¹į¹hisampannassa puggalassa abhisametÄvino etadeva bahutaraį¹ dukkhaį¹ yadidaį¹ parikkhÄ«į¹aį¹ pariyÄdiį¹į¹aį¹; appamattakaį¹ avasiį¹į¹haį¹. āIn the same way, for a person with comprehension, a noble disciple accomplished in view, the suffering thatās over and done with is more, whatās left is tiny.

Compared to the mass of suffering in the past thatās over and done with, itās not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part, since there are at most seven more lives.
Evaį¹ mahatthiyo kho, bhikkhave, dhammÄbhisamayo; evaį¹ mahatthiyo dhammacakkhupaį¹ilÄbhoāti. Thatās how very beneficial it is to comprehend the teaching and gain the vision of the teaching.ā
