Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, himavā pabbatarājā parikkhayaį¹ pariyādānaį¹ gaccheyya, į¹­hapetvā satta sāsapamattiyo pāsāį¹‡asakkharā. ā€œMendicants, suppose the Himalayas, the king of mountains, was worn away and eroded except for seven pebbles the size of mustard seeds.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹, yaį¹ vā himavato pabbatarājassa parikkhÄ«į¹‡aį¹ pariyādiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ yā vā satta sāsapamattiyo pāsāį¹‡asakkharā avasiį¹­į¹­hāā€ti? Which is more: the portion of the Himalayas, the king of mountains, that has been worn away and eroded, or the seven pebbles the size of mustard seeds that are left?ā€

ā€œEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹ himavato pabbatarājassa yadidaį¹ parikkhÄ«į¹‡aį¹ pariyādiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹; ā€œSir, the portion of the Himalayas, the king of mountains, that has been worn away and eroded is certainly more.

appamattikā satta sāsapamattiyo pāsāį¹‡asakkharā avasiį¹­į¹­hā. The seven pebbles the size of mustard seeds are tiny.

Neva satimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti na sahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti na satasahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti himavato pabbatarājassa parikkhÄ«į¹‡aį¹ pariyādiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ upanidhāya satta sāsapamattiyo pāsāį¹‡asakkharā avasiį¹­į¹­hāā€ti. Compared to the Himalayas, itā€™s not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa diį¹­į¹­hisampannassa puggalassa abhisametāvino etadeva bahutaraį¹ dukkhaį¹ yadidaį¹ parikkhÄ«į¹‡aį¹ pariyādiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹; ā€œIn the same way, for a noble disciple accomplished in view, a person with comprehension, the suffering thatā€™s over and done with is more,

appamattakaį¹ avasiį¹­į¹­haį¹. whatā€™s left is tiny.

Neva satimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti na sahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti na satasahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti purimaį¹ dukkhakkhandhaį¹ parikkhÄ«į¹‡aį¹ pariyādiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ upanidhāya yadidaį¹ sattakkhattuį¹paramatā. Compared to the mass of suffering in the past thatā€™s over and done with, itā€™s not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part, since there are at most seven more lives.

Evaį¹ mahatthiyo kho, bhikkhave, dhammābhisamayo, evaį¹ mahatthiyo dhammacakkhupaį¹­ilābhoā€ti. Thatā€™s how very beneficial it is to comprehend the teaching and gain the vision of the teaching.ā€
