Tatiyapabbatasutta A Mountain (3rd)

Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, puriso sinerussa pabbatarājassa satta muggamattiyo pāsāį¹‡asakkharā upanikkhipeyya. ā€œMendicants, suppose a person was to place down on Sineru, the king of mountains, seven pebbles the size of mung beans.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹, yā vā satta muggamattiyo pāsāį¹‡asakkharā upanikkhittā yo vā sineru pabbatarājāā€ti? Which is more: the seven pebbles the size of mung beans, or Sineru, the king of mountains?ā€

ā€œEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹ yadidaį¹ sineru pabbatarājā; ā€œSir, Sineru, the king of mountains, is certainly more.

appamattikā satta muggamattiyo pāsāį¹‡asakkharā upanikkhittā. The seven pebbles the size of mung beans are tiny.

Neva satimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti na sahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti na satasahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti sineruį¹ pabbatarājānaį¹ upanidhāya satta muggamattiyo pāsāį¹‡asakkharā upanikkhittāā€ti. Compared to Sineru, itā€™s not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part.ā€

ā€œEvameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa diį¹­į¹­hisampannassa puggalassa adhigamaį¹ upanidhāya aƱƱatitthiyasamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡aparibbājakānaį¹ adhigamo neva satimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti na sahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti na satasahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti. ā€œIn the same way, compared with the achievements of a noble disciple accomplished in view, the achievements of the ascetics, brahmins, and wanderers of other religions is not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part.

Evaį¹ mahādhigamo, bhikkhave, diį¹­į¹­hisampanno puggalo, evaį¹ mahābhiƱƱoā€ti. So great is the achievement of the person accomplished in view, so great is their direct knowledge.ā€
