Nophassanānattasutta Not Diversity of Contacts

Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œDhātunānattaį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­icca uppajjati phassanānattaį¹, no phassanānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati dhātunānattaį¹. ā€œMendicants, diversity of elements gives rise to diversity of contacts. Diversity of contacts doesnā€™t give rise to diversity of elements.

KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, dhātunānattaį¹? And what is the diversity of elements?

Cakkhudhātu ā€¦peā€¦ The eye element, ear element, nose element, tongue element, body element, and mind element.

manodhātuā€”

idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, dhātunānattaį¹. This is called the diversity of elements.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, dhātunānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati phassanānattaį¹, no phassanānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati dhātunānattaį¹? And how does diversity of elements give rise to diversity of contacts, while diversity of contacts doesnā€™t give rise to diversity of elements?

Cakkhudhātuį¹, bhikkhave, paį¹­icca uppajjati cakkhusamphasso, no cakkhusamphassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati cakkhudhātu ā€¦peā€¦ The eye element gives rise to eye contact. Eye contact doesnā€™t give rise to the eye element. ā€¦

manodhātuį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati manosamphasso, no manosamphassaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati manodhātu. The mind element gives rise to mind contact. Mind contact doesnā€™t give rise to the mind element.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, dhātunānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati phassanānattaį¹, no phassanānattaį¹ paį¹­icca uppajjati dhātunānattanā€ti. Thatā€™s how diversity of elements gives rise to diversity of contacts, while diversity of contacts doesnā€™t give rise to diversity of elements.ā€
