Nocedaį¹sutta If There Was No
SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
āNo cedaį¹, bhikkhave, pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ assÄdo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattÄ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ sÄrajjeyyuį¹. āMendicants, if there were no gratification in the earth element, sentient beings wouldnāt be aroused by it.
YasmÄ ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ assÄdo, tasmÄ sattÄ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ sÄrajjanti. But since there is gratification in the earth element, sentient beings are aroused by it.
No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ ÄdÄ«navo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattÄ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ nibbindeyyuį¹. If the earth element had no drawback, sentient beings wouldnāt grow disillusioned with it.
YasmÄ ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ ÄdÄ«navo, tasmÄ sattÄ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ nibbindanti. But since the earth element has a drawback, sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it.
No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ nissaraį¹aį¹ abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattÄ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ nissareyyuį¹. If there were no escape from the earth element, sentient beings wouldnāt escape from it.
YasmÄ ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ nissaraį¹aį¹, tasmÄ sattÄ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ nissaranti. But since there is an escape from the earth element, sentient beings do escape from it.
No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, ÄpodhÄtuyÄ assÄdo abhavissa ā¦peā¦ If there were no gratification in the water element ā¦
no cedaį¹, bhikkhave, tejodhÄtuyÄ ā¦peā¦ If there were no gratification in the fire element ā¦
no cedaį¹, bhikkhave, vÄyodhÄtuyÄ assÄdo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattÄ vÄyodhÄtuyÄ sÄrajjeyyuį¹. If there were no gratification in the air element ā¦

YÄvakÄ«vaƱcime, bhikkhave, sattÄ imÄsaį¹ catunnaį¹ dhÄtÅ«naį¹ assÄdaƱca assÄdato ÄdÄ«navaƱca ÄdÄ«navato nissaraį¹aƱca nissaraį¹ato yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ na abbhaƱƱaį¹su, neva tÄvime, bhikkhave, sattÄ sadevakÄ lokÄ samÄrakÄ sabrahmakÄ sassamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹iyÄ pajÄya sadevamanussÄya nissaį¹Ä visaį¹yuttÄ vippamuttÄ vimariyÄdikatena cetasÄ vihariį¹su. As long as sentient beings donāt truly understand these four elementsā gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they havenāt escaped from this worldāwith its gods, MÄras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humansāand they donāt live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.
Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, sattÄ imÄsaį¹ catunnaį¹ dhÄtÅ«naį¹ assÄdaƱca assÄdato ÄdÄ«navaƱca ÄdÄ«navato nissaraį¹aƱca nissaraį¹ato yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ abbhaƱƱaį¹su, atha, bhikkhave, sattÄ sadevakÄ lokÄ samÄrakÄ sabrahmakÄ sassamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹iyÄ pajÄya sadevamanussÄya nissaį¹Ä visaį¹yuttÄ vippamuttÄ vimariyÄdikatena cetasÄ viharantÄ«āti. But when sentient beings truly understand these four elementsā gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, theyāve escaped from this worldāwith its gods, MÄras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humansāand they live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.ā
