ā€œNo cedaį¹, bhikkhave, pathavÄ«dhātuyā assādo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā pathavÄ«dhātuyā sārajjeyyuį¹. ā€œMendicants, if there were no gratification in the earth element, sentient beings wouldnā€™t be aroused by it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi pathavīdhātuyā assādo, tasmā sattā pathavīdhātuyā sārajjanti. But since there is gratification in the earth element, sentient beings are aroused by it.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, pathavÄ«dhātuyā ādÄ«navo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā pathavÄ«dhātuyā nibbindeyyuį¹. If the earth element had no drawback, sentient beings wouldnā€™t grow disillusioned with it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi pathavīdhātuyā ādīnavo, tasmā sattā pathavīdhātuyā nibbindanti. But since the earth element has a drawback, sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, pathavÄ«dhātuyā nissaraį¹‡aį¹ abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā pathavÄ«dhātuyā nissareyyuį¹. If there were no escape from the earth element, sentient beings wouldnā€™t escape from it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi pathavÄ«dhātuyā nissaraį¹‡aį¹, tasmā sattā pathavÄ«dhātuyā nissaranti. But since there is an escape from the earth element, sentient beings do escape from it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi vāyodhātuyā ādīnavo, tasmā sattā vāyodhātuyā nibbindanti.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, vāyodhātuyā nissaraį¹‡aį¹ abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā vāyodhātuyā nissareyyuį¹.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi vāyodhātuyā nissaraį¹‡aį¹, tasmā sattā vāyodhātuyā nissaranti.

As long as sentient beings donā€™t truly understand these four elementsā€™ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they havenā€™t escaped from this worldā€”with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humansā€”and they donā€™t live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.
