Sāvakasutta Disciples

Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhÅ« yena bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinnā kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and asked him,

ā€œkÄ«vabahukā nu kho, bhante, kappā abbhatÄ«tā atikkantāā€ti? ā€œSir, how many eons have passed?ā€

ā€œBahukā kho, bhikkhave, kappā abbhatÄ«tā atikkantā. ā€œMendicants, many eons have passed.

Te na sukarā saį¹…khātuį¹: Itā€™s not easy to calculate

ā€˜ettakā kappā iti vā, ettakāni kappasatāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasahassāni iti vā, ettakāni kappasatasahassāni iti vāā€™ā€ti. how many eons have passed, how many hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of eons.ā€

ā€œSakkā pana, bhante, upamaį¹ kātunā€ti? ā€œBut sir, is it possible to give a simile?ā€

ā€œSakkā, bhikkhaveā€ti bhagavā avoca. ā€œItā€™s possible,ā€ said the Buddha.

ā€œIdhassu, bhikkhave, cattāro sāvakā vassasatāyukā vassasatajÄ«vino. ā€œSuppose there were four disciples with a lifespan of a hundred years.

Te divase divase kappasatasahassaį¹ kappasatasahassaį¹ anussareyyuį¹. And each day they would each recollect a hundred thousand eons.

Ananussaritāva, bhikkhave, tehi kappā assu, atha kho te cattāro sāvakā vassasatāyukā vassasatajÄ«vino vassasatassa accayena kālaį¹ kareyyuį¹. Those four disciples would pass away after a hundred years and there would still be eons that they havenā€™t recollected.

Evaį¹ bahukā kho, bhikkhave, kappā abbhatÄ«tā atikkantā. Thatā€™s how many eons have passed.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Anamataggoyaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹sāro ā€¦peā€¦ Transmigration has no known beginning. ā€¦

alaį¹ vimuccitunā€ti. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.ā€
