Vepullapabbatasutta Mount Vepulla

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹­e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vultureā€™s Peak Mountain.

Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,

ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti. ā€œMendicants!ā€

ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œAnamataggoyaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹sāro. ā€œMendicants, transmigration has no known beginning.

Pubbā koį¹­i na paƱƱāyati avijjānÄ«varaį¹‡Änaį¹ sattānaį¹ taį¹‡hāsaį¹yojanānaį¹ sandhāvataį¹ saį¹sarataį¹. No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving.

BhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa ā€˜pācÄ«navaį¹soā€™tveva samaƱƱā udapādi. Once upon a time, mendicants, this Mount Vepulla was known as PācÄ«navaį¹sa.

Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena manussānaį¹ ā€˜tivarāā€™tveva samaƱƱā udapādi. And at that time people were known as Tivaras.

Tivarānaį¹, bhikkhave, manussānaį¹ cattārÄ«sa vassasahassāni āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ ahosi. The lifespan of the Tivaras was 40,000 years.

Tivarā, bhikkhave, manussā pācÄ«navaį¹saį¹ pabbataį¹ catÅ«hena ārohanti, catÅ«hena orohanti. It took them four days to climb Mount Vepulla, and four days to descend.

Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena kakusandho bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno hoti. At that time Kakusandha, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arose in the world.

Kakusandhassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa vidhurasaƱjÄ«vaį¹ nāma sāvakayugaį¹ ahosi aggaį¹ bhaddayugaį¹. Kakusandha had a fine pair of chief disciples named Vidhura and SaƱjÄ«va.

Passatha, bhikkhave, sā cevimassa pabbatassa samaƱƱā antarahitā, te ca manussā kālaį¹…katā, so ca bhagavā parinibbuto. See, mendicants! This mountainā€™s name has vanished, those people have passed away, and that Buddha has become fully quenched.

Evaį¹ aniccā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā; So impermanent are conditions,

evaį¹ addhuvā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā; so unstable are conditions,

evaį¹ anassāsikā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā. so unreliable are conditions.

YāvaƱcidaį¹, bhikkhave, alameva sabbasaį¹…khāresu nibbindituį¹, alaį¹ virajjituį¹, alaį¹ vimuccituį¹. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.

BhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa ā€˜vaį¹…kakoā€™tveva samaƱƱā udapādi. Once upon a time this Mount Vepulla was known as Vaį¹…kaka.

Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena manussānaį¹ ā€˜rohitassāā€™tveva samaƱƱā udapādi. And at that time people were known as Rohitassas.

Rohitassānaį¹, bhikkhave, manussānaį¹ tiį¹savassasahassāni āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ ahosi. The lifespan of the Rohitassas was 30,000 years.

Rohitassā, bhikkhave, manussā vaį¹…kakaį¹ pabbataį¹ tÄ«hena ārohanti, tÄ«hena orohanti. It took them three days to climb Mount Vepulla, and three days to descend.

Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena koį¹‡Ägamano bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno hoti. At that time Koį¹‡Ägamana, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arose in the world.

Koį¹‡Ägamanassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa bhiyyosuttaraį¹ nāma sāvakayugaį¹ ahosi aggaį¹ bhaddayugaį¹. Koį¹‡Ägamana had a fine pair of chief disciples named Bhiyyosa and Uttara.

Passatha, bhikkhave, sā cevimassa pabbatassa samaƱƱā antarahitā, te ca manussā kālaį¹…katā, so ca bhagavā parinibbuto. See, mendicants! This mountainā€™s name has vanished, those people have passed away, and that Buddha has become fully quenched.

alaį¹ vimuccituį¹.

BhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa ā€˜supassoā€™tveva samaƱƱā udapādi. Once upon a time this Mount Vepulla was known as Supassa.

Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena manussānaį¹ ā€˜suppiyāā€™tveva samaƱƱā udapādi. And at that time people were known as Suppiyas.

Suppiyānaį¹, bhikkhave, manussānaį¹ vÄ«sativassasahassāni āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ ahosi. The lifespan of the Suppiyas was 20,000 years.

Suppiyā, bhikkhave, manussā supassaį¹ pabbataį¹ dvÄ«hena ārohanti, dvÄ«hena orohanti. It took them two days to climb Mount Vepulla, and two days to descend.

Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena kassapo bhagavā arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno hoti. At that time Kassapa, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arose in the world.

Kassapassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa tissabhāradvājaį¹ nāma sāvakayugaį¹ ahosi aggaį¹ bhaddayugaį¹. Kassapa had a fine pair of chief disciples named Tissa and Bhāradvāja.

Passatha, bhikkhave, sā cevimassa pabbatassa samaƱƱā antarahitā, te ca manussā kālaį¹…katā, so ca bhagavā parinibbuto. See, mendicants! This mountainā€™s name has vanished, those people have passed away, and that Buddha has become fully quenched.

Evaį¹ aniccā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā; So impermanent are conditions ā€¦

evaį¹ addhuvā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā ā€¦peā€¦

alaį¹ vimuccituį¹.

Etarahi kho pana, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa ā€˜vepulloā€™tveva samaƱƱā udapādi. These days this Mount Vepulla is known as Vepulla.

Etarahi kho pana, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ manussānaį¹ ā€˜māgadhakāā€™tveva samaƱƱā udapādi. And these people are known as Magadhans.

Māgadhakānaį¹, bhikkhave, manussānaį¹ appakaį¹ āyuppamāį¹‡aį¹ parittaį¹ lahukaį¹; The lifespan of the Magadhans is short, brief, and fleeting.

yo ciraį¹ jÄ«vati so vassasataį¹ appaį¹ vā bhiyyo. A long life is a hundred years or a little more.

Māgadhakā, bhikkhave, manussā vepullaį¹ pabbataį¹ muhuttena ārohanti muhuttena orohanti. It takes the Magadhans an hour to climb Mount Vepulla, and an hour to descend.

Etarahi kho panāhaį¹, bhikkhave, arahaį¹ sammāsambuddho loke uppanno. And now I am the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha who has arisen in the world.

Mayhaį¹ kho pana, bhikkhave, sāriputtamoggallānaį¹ nāma sāvakayugaį¹ aggaį¹ bhaddayugaį¹. I have a fine pair of chief disciples named Sāriputta and Moggallāna.

Bhavissati, bhikkhave, so samayo yā ayaƱcevimassa pabbatassa samaƱƱā antaradhāyissati, ime ca manussā kālaį¹ karissanti, ahaƱca parinibbāyissāmi. There will come a time when this mountainā€™s name will vanish, those people will die, and I will be fully extinguished.

Evaį¹ aniccā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā; So impermanent are conditions,

evaį¹ addhuvā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā; so unstable are conditions,

evaį¹ anassāsikā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā. so unreliable are conditions.

YāvaƱcidaį¹, bhikkhave, alameva sabbasaį¹…khāresu nibbindituį¹, alaį¹ virajjituį¹, alaį¹ vimuccitunā€ti. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.ā€

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said.

Idaį¹ vatvāna sugato athāparaį¹ etadavoca satthā: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

ā€œPācÄ«navaį¹so tivarānaį¹, ā€œFor the Tivaras it was PācÄ«navaį¹sa,

rohitassāna vaį¹…kako; for the Rohitassas, Vaį¹…kaka,

Suppiyānaį¹ supassoti, Supassa for the Suppiyas,

māgadhānaƱca vepullo. and Vepulla for the Magadhans.

Aniccā vata saį¹…khārā, Oh! Conditions are impermanent,

uppādavayadhammino; their nature is to rise and fall;

Uppajjitvā nirujjhanti, having arisen, they cease;

tesaį¹ vÅ«pasamo sukhoā€ti. their stilling is such bliss.ā€

Dasamaį¹.

Dutiyo vaggo.

Tassuddānaį¹

Duggataį¹ sukhitaƱceva,

tiį¹sa mātāpitena ca;

Bhātā bhaginī putto ca,

dhÄ«tā vepullapabbataį¹.
