Vepullapabbatasutta Mount Vepulla
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati gijjhakÅ«į¹e pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, on the Vultureās Peak Mountain.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,
ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āAnamataggoyaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹sÄro. āMendicants, transmigration has no known beginning.
PubbÄ koį¹i na paƱƱÄyati avijjÄnÄ«varaį¹Änaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ taį¹hÄsaį¹yojanÄnaį¹ sandhÄvataį¹ saį¹sarataį¹. No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving.
BhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa āpÄcÄ«navaį¹soātveva samaĆ±Ć±Ä udapÄdi. Once upon a time, mendicants, this Mount Vepulla was known as PÄcÄ«navaį¹sa.
Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena manussÄnaį¹ ātivarÄātveva samaĆ±Ć±Ä udapÄdi. And at that time people were known as Tivaras.
TivarÄnaį¹, bhikkhave, manussÄnaį¹ cattÄrÄ«sa vassasahassÄni ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹ ahosi. The lifespan of the Tivaras was 40,000 years.
TivarÄ, bhikkhave, manussÄ pÄcÄ«navaį¹saį¹ pabbataį¹ catÅ«hena Ärohanti, catÅ«hena orohanti. It took them four days to climb Mount Vepulla, and four days to descend.
Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena kakusandho bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho loke uppanno hoti. At that time Kakusandha, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arose in the world.
Kakusandhassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammÄsambuddhassa vidhurasaƱjÄ«vaį¹ nÄma sÄvakayugaį¹ ahosi aggaį¹ bhaddayugaį¹. Kakusandha had a fine pair of chief disciples named Vidhura and SaƱjÄ«va.
Passatha, bhikkhave, sÄ cevimassa pabbatassa samaĆ±Ć±Ä antarahitÄ, te ca manussÄ kÄlaį¹
katÄ, so ca bhagavÄ parinibbuto. See, mendicants! This mountainās name has vanished, those people have passed away, and that Buddha has become fully quenched.
Evaį¹ aniccÄ, bhikkhave, saį¹
khÄrÄ; So impermanent are conditions,
evaį¹ addhuvÄ, bhikkhave, saį¹
khÄrÄ; so unstable are conditions,
evaį¹ anassÄsikÄ, bhikkhave, saį¹
khÄrÄ. so unreliable are conditions.
YÄvaƱcidaį¹, bhikkhave, alameva sabbasaį¹
khÄresu nibbindituį¹, alaį¹ virajjituį¹, alaį¹ vimuccituį¹. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.
BhÅ«tapubbaį¹, bhikkhave, imassa vepullassa pabbatassa āvaį¹
kakoātveva samaĆ±Ć±Ä udapÄdi. Once upon a time this Mount Vepulla was known as Vaį¹
kaka.
Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena manussÄnaį¹ ārohitassÄātveva samaĆ±Ć±Ä udapÄdi. And at that time people were known as Rohitassas.
RohitassÄnaį¹, bhikkhave, manussÄnaį¹ tiį¹savassasahassÄni ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹ ahosi. The lifespan of the Rohitassas was 30,000 years.
RohitassÄ, bhikkhave, manussÄ vaį¹
kakaį¹ pabbataį¹ tÄ«hena Ärohanti, tÄ«hena orohanti. It took them three days to climb Mount Vepulla, and three days to descend.
Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena koį¹Ägamano bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho loke uppanno hoti. At that time Koį¹Ägamana, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha arose in the world.
Koį¹Ägamanassa, bhikkhave, bhagavato arahato sammÄsambuddhassa bhiyyosuttaraį¹ nÄma sÄvakayugaį¹ ahosi aggaį¹ bhaddayugaį¹. Koį¹Ägamana had a fine pair of chief disciples named Bhiyyosa and Uttara.

SuppiyÄnaį¹, bhikkhave, manussÄnaį¹ vÄ«sativassasahassÄni ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹ ahosi. The lifespan of the Suppiyas was 20,000 years.
SuppiyÄ, bhikkhave, manussÄ supassaį¹ pabbataį¹ dvÄ«hena Ärohanti, dvÄ«hena orohanti. It took them two days to climb Mount Vepulla, and two days to descend.

Etarahi kho pana, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ manussÄnaį¹ āmÄgadhakÄātveva samaĆ±Ć±Ä udapÄdi. And these people are known as Magadhans.
MÄgadhakÄnaį¹, bhikkhave, manussÄnaį¹ appakaį¹ ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹ parittaį¹ lahukaį¹; The lifespan of the Magadhans is short, brief, and fleeting.
yo ciraį¹ jÄ«vati so vassasataį¹ appaį¹ vÄ bhiyyo. A long life is a hundred years or a little more.
MÄgadhakÄ, bhikkhave, manussÄ vepullaį¹ pabbataį¹ muhuttena Ärohanti muhuttena orohanti. It takes the Magadhans an hour to climb Mount Vepulla, and an hour to descend.
Etarahi kho panÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho loke uppanno. And now I am the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha who has arisen in the world.
Mayhaį¹ kho pana, bhikkhave, sÄriputtamoggallÄnaį¹ nÄma sÄvakayugaį¹ aggaį¹ bhaddayugaį¹. I have a fine pair of chief disciples named SÄriputta and MoggallÄna.
Bhavissati, bhikkhave, so samayo yÄ ayaƱcevimassa pabbatassa samaĆ±Ć±Ä antaradhÄyissati, ime ca manussÄ kÄlaį¹ karissanti, ahaƱca parinibbÄyissÄmi. There will come a time when this mountainās name will vanish, those people will die, and I will be fully extinguished.

khÄrÄ; So impermanent are conditions,
evaį¹ addhuvÄ, bhikkhave, saį¹
khÄrÄ; so unstable are conditions,
evaį¹ anassÄsikÄ, bhikkhave, saį¹
khÄrÄ. so unreliable are conditions.
YÄvaƱcidaį¹, bhikkhave, alameva sabbasaį¹
khÄresu nibbindituį¹, alaį¹ virajjituį¹, alaį¹ vimuccitunāti. This is quite enough for you to become disillusioned, dispassionate, and freed regarding all conditions.ā
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.

āPÄcÄ«navaį¹so tivarÄnaį¹, āFor the Tivaras it was PÄcÄ«navaį¹sa,
rohitassÄna vaį¹
kako; for the Rohitassas, Vaį¹
kaka,
SuppiyÄnaį¹ supassoti, Supassa for the Suppiyas,
mÄgadhÄnaƱca vepullo. and Vepulla for the Magadhans.
AniccÄ vata saį¹
khÄrÄ, Oh! Conditions are impermanent,
uppÄdavayadhammino; their nature is to rise and fall;
UppajjitvÄ nirujjhanti, having arisen, they cease;
tesaį¹ vÅ«pasamo sukhoāti. their stilling is such bliss.ā
Dasamaį¹.
Dutiyo vaggo.

Duggataį¹ sukhitaƱceva,
tiį¹sa mÄtÄpitena ca;
BhÄtÄ bhaginÄ« putto ca,
