Anottappīsutta Imprudent

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ca mahākassapo āyasmā ca sāriputto bārāį¹‡asiyaį¹ viharanti isipatane migadāye. At one time Venerable Mahākassapa and Venerable Sāriputta were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹­isallānā vuį¹­į¹­hito yenāyasmā mahākassapo tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmatā mahākassapena saddhiį¹ sammodi. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Sāriputta came out of retreat, went to Venerable Mahākassapa, and exchanged greetings with him.

SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sāraį¹‡Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisāretvā ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaį¹ mahākassapaį¹ etadavoca: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Mahākassapa:

ā€œvuccati hidaį¹, āvuso kassapa, anātāpÄ« anottappÄ« abhabbo sambodhāya abhabbo nibbānāya abhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamāya; ā€œReverend Kassapa, itā€™s said that without being keen and prudent you canā€™t achieve awakening, extinguishment, and the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

ātāpÄ« ca kho ottappÄ« bhabbo sambodhāya bhabbo nibbānāya bhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamāyāā€ti. But if youā€™re keen and prudent you can achieve awakening, extinguishment, and the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

ā€œKittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, anātāpÄ« hoti anottappÄ« abhabbo sambodhāya abhabbo nibbānāya abhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamāya; To what extent is this the case?ā€

kittāvatā ca panāvuso, ātāpÄ« hoti ottappÄ« bhabbo sambodhāya bhabbo nibbānāya bhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamāyāā€ti?

ā€œIdhāvuso, bhikkhu ā€˜anuppannā me pāpakā akusalā dhammā uppajjamānā anatthāya saį¹vatteyyunā€™ti na ātappaį¹ karoti, ā€˜uppannā me pāpakā akusalā dhammā appahÄ«yamānā anatthāya saį¹vatteyyunā€™ti na ātappaį¹ karoti, ā€˜anuppannā me kusalā dhammā nuppajjamānā anatthāya saį¹vatteyyunā€™ti na ātappaį¹ karoti, ā€˜uppannā me kusalā dhammā nirujjhamānā anatthāya saį¹vatteyyunā€™ti na ātappaį¹ karoti. ā€œReverend, take a mendicant who doesnā€™t foster keenness by thinking: ā€˜If unarisen unskillful qualities arise in me, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If I donā€™t give up arisen unskillful qualities, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If I donā€™t give rise to unarisen skillful qualities, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If arisen skillful qualities cease in me, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™

Evaį¹ kho, āvuso, anātāpÄ« hoti. Thatā€™s how youā€™re not keen.

KathaƱcāvuso, anottappī hoti? And how are you not prudent?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu ā€˜anuppannā me pāpakā akusalā dhammā uppajjamānā anatthāya saį¹vatteyyunā€™ti na ottappati, ā€˜uppannā me pāpakā akusalā dhammā appahÄ«yamānā anatthāya saį¹vatteyyunā€™ti na ottappati, ā€˜anuppannā me kusalā dhammā nuppajjamānā anatthāya saį¹vatteyyunā€™ti na ottappati, ā€˜uppannā me kusalā dhammā nirujjhamānā anatthāya saį¹vatteyyunā€™ti na ottappati. Take a mendicant who doesnā€™t foster prudence by thinking: ā€˜If unarisen unskillful qualities arise in me, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If I donā€™t give up arisen unskillful qualities, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If I donā€™t give rise to unarisen skillful qualities, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If arisen skillful qualities cease in me, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™

Take a mendicant who fosters keenness by thinking: ā€˜If unarisen unskillful qualities arise in me, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If I donā€™t give up arisen unskillful qualities, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If I donā€™t give rise to unarisen skillful qualities, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™ ā€˜If arisen skillful qualities cease in me, theyā€™ll lead to harm.ā€™
