āCandÅ«pamÄ, bhikkhave, kulÄni upasaį¹
kamathaāāMendicants, you should approach families like the moon:
apakasseva kÄyaį¹, apakassa cittaį¹, niccanavakÄ kulesu appagabbhÄ. withdrawn in body and mind, always the newcomer, and never rude.
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, puriso jarudapÄnaį¹ vÄ olokeyya pabbatavisamaį¹ vÄ nadÄ«viduggaį¹ vÄāSuppose a person were to look down at an old well, a rugged cliff, or an inaccessible riverland.
apakasseva kÄyaį¹, apakassa cittaį¹; Theyād withdraw their body and mind.
evameva kho, bhikkhave, candÅ«pamÄ kulÄni upasaį¹
kamathaāIn the same way, you should approach families like the moon:
apakasseva kÄyaį¹, apakassa cittaį¹, niccanavakÄ kulesu appagabbhÄ. withdrawn in body and mind, always the newcomer, and never rude.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?
kathaį¹rÅ«po bhikkhu arahati kulÄni upasaį¹
kamitunāti? What kind of mendicant is worthy of approaching families?ā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ bhagavaį¹nettikÄ bhagavaį¹paį¹isaraį¹Ä. SÄdhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹ibhÄtu etassa bhÄsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti. āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā
Atha kho bhagavÄ ÄkÄse pÄį¹iį¹ cÄlesi. Then the Buddha waved his hand in space.
āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, ayaį¹ ÄkÄse pÄį¹i na sajjati na gayhati na bajjhati; āMendicants, this hand is not stuck or held or caught in space.
evameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci bhikkhuno kulÄni upasaį¹
kamato kulesu cittaį¹ na sajjati na gayhati na bajjhati: In the same way, when approaching families, a mendicantās mind is not stuck or held or caught, thinking:
ālabhantu lÄbhakÄmÄ, puƱƱakÄmÄ karontu puƱƱÄnÄ«āti; āMay those who want material things get them, and may those who want merit make merits!ā
yathÄsakena lÄbhena attamano hoti sumano, evaį¹ paresaį¹ lÄbhena attamano hoti sumano; Theyāre just as pleased and happy when others get something as they are when they get something.
evarÅ«po kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahati kulÄni upasaį¹
kamituį¹. This kind of mendicant is worthy of approaching families.
Kassapassa, bhikkhave, kulÄni upasaį¹
kamato kulesu cittaį¹ na sajjati na gayhati na bajjhati: When Kassapa approaches families, his mind is not stuck or held or caught, thinking:
ālabhantu lÄbhakÄmÄ, puƱƱakÄmÄ karontu puƱƱÄnÄ«āti; āMay those who want material things get them, and may those who want merit make merits!ā
yathÄsakena lÄbhena attamano hoti sumano; Heās just as pleased and happy when others get something as he is when he gets something.
evaį¹ paresaį¹ lÄbhena attamano hoti sumano.
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?
kathaį¹rÅ«passa bhikkhuno aparisuddhÄ dhammadesanÄ hoti, kathaį¹rÅ«passa bhikkhuno parisuddhÄ dhammadesanÄ hotÄ«āti? What kind of mendicantās teaching is pure, and what kind is impure?ā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ bhagavaį¹nettikÄ bhagavaį¹paį¹isaraį¹Ä. SÄdhu vata, bhante, bhagavantaį¹yeva paį¹ibhÄtu etassa bhÄsitassa attho. Bhagavato sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti. āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. āTena hi, bhikkhave, suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti. āWell then, mendicants, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āYes, sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:
āYo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹citto paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti: āWhoever teaches Dhamma to others with the thought:
āaho vata me dhammaį¹ suį¹eyyuį¹, sutvÄ ca pana dhammaį¹ pasÄ«deyyuį¹, pasannÄ ca me pasannÄkÄraį¹ kareyyunāti; āOh! May they listen to the teaching from me. When theyāve heard it, may they gain confidence in the teaching and demonstrate their confidence to me.ā
evarÅ«passa kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno aparisuddhÄ dhammadesanÄ hoti. Such a mendicantās teaching is impure.
Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹citto paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti: Whoever teaches Dhamma to others with the thought:
āsvÄkkhÄto bhagavatÄ dhammo sandiį¹į¹hiko akÄliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ti. āThe teaching is well explained by the Buddhaāapparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.
Aho vata me dhammaį¹ suį¹eyyuį¹, sutvÄ ca pana dhammaį¹ ÄjÄneyyuį¹, ÄjÄnitvÄ ca pana tathattÄya paį¹ipajjeyyunāti. Oh! May they listen to the teaching from me. When theyāve heard it, may they understand the teaching and practice accordingly.ā
Iti dhammasudhammataį¹ paį¹icca paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti, kÄruƱƱaį¹ paį¹icca anuddayaį¹ paį¹icca anukampaį¹ upÄdÄya paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti. So they teach others because of the natural excellence of the teaching, out of compassion, kindness, and sympathy.
EvarÅ«passa kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno parisuddhÄ dhammadesanÄ hoti. Such a mendicantās teaching is pure.
Kassapo, bhikkhave, evaį¹citto paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti: Kassapa teaches Dhamma to others with the thought:
āsvÄkkhÄto bhagavatÄ dhammo sandiį¹į¹hiko akÄliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viĆ±Ć±Å«hÄ«ti. āThe teaching is well explained by the Buddhaāapparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.

Iti dhammasudhammataį¹ paį¹icca paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti, kÄruƱƱaį¹ paį¹icca anuddayaį¹ paį¹icca anukampaį¹ upÄdÄya paresaį¹ dhammaį¹ deseti. Thus he teaches others because of the natural excellence of the teaching, out of sympathy, kindness, and sympathy.
Kassapena vÄ hi vo, bhikkhave, ovadissÄmi yo vÄ panassa kassapasadiso, ovaditehi ca pana vo tathattÄya paį¹ipajjitabbanāti. I will exhort you with the example of Kassapa or someone like him. You should practice accordingly.ā
