Kulūpakasutta Visiting Families

Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, ā€œWhat do you think, mendicants?

kathaį¹rÅ«po bhikkhu arahati kulÅ«pako hotuį¹, kathaį¹rÅ«po bhikkhu na arahati kulÅ«pako hotunā€ti? What kind of mendicant is worthy of visiting families? And what kind of mendicant is not worthy of visiting families?ā€

Bhagavaį¹mÅ«lakā no, bhante, dhammā ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. ā€¦ā€

bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œYo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹citto kulāni upasaį¹…kamati: ā€œWhoever visits families with the thought:

ā€˜dentuyeva me, mā nādaį¹su; ā€˜May they give to me, may they not fail to give.

bahukaƱƱeva me dentu, mā thokaį¹; May they give a lot, not a little.

paį¹‡Ä«taƱƱeva me dentu, mā lÅ«khaį¹; May they give me fine things, not coarse.

sÄ«ghaƱƱeva me dentu, mā dandhaį¹; May they give quickly, not slowly.

sakkaccaƱƱeva me dentu, mā asakkaccanā€™ti. May they give carefully, not carelessly.ā€™

Tassa ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno evaį¹cittassa kulāni upasaį¹…kamato na denti, tena bhikkhu sandÄ«yati; so tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. If a mendicant with such a thought approaches a family and they donā€™t give, the mendicant feels slighted. And they experience pain and sadness because of that.

Thokaį¹ denti, no bahukaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ If they give only a little ā€¦

lÅ«khaį¹ denti, no paį¹‡Ä«taį¹ ā€¦ if they give coarse things ā€¦

dandhaį¹ denti, no sÄ«ghaį¹, tena bhikkhu sandÄ«yati; so tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. if they give slowly ā€¦

Asakkaccaį¹ denti, no sakkaccaį¹; tena bhikkhu sandÄ«yati; so tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. if they give carelessly, the mendicant feels slighted. And they experience pain and sadness because of that.

EvarÅ«po kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na arahati kulÅ«pako hotuį¹. That kind of mendicant is not worthy of visiting families.

Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaį¹citto kulāni upasaį¹…kamati: Whoever visits families with the thought:

ā€˜taį¹ kutettha labbhā parakulesuā€”ā€˜When among other families, how could I possibly think:

dentuyeva me, mā nādaį¹su; ā€œMay they give to me, may they not fail to give.

bahukaƱƱeva me dentu, mā thokaį¹; May they give a lot, not a little.

paį¹‡Ä«taƱƱeva me dentu, mā lÅ«khaį¹; May they give me fine things, not coarse.

sÄ«ghaƱƱeva me dentu, mā dandhaį¹; May they give quickly, not slowly.

sakkaccaƱƱeva me dentu, mā asakkaccanā€™ti. May they give carefully, not carelessly.ā€ā€™

Tassa ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno evaį¹cittassa kulāni upasaį¹…kamato na denti; tena bhikkhu na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. If a mendicant with such a thought approaches a family and they donā€™t give, the mendicant doesnā€™t feel slighted. And they donā€™t experience pain and sadness because of that.

Thokaį¹ denti, no bahukaį¹; tena bhikkhu na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. If they give only a little ā€¦

LÅ«khaį¹ denti, no paį¹‡Ä«taį¹; tena bhikkhu na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. if they give coarse things ā€¦

Dandhaį¹ denti, no sÄ«ghaį¹; tena bhikkhu na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. if they give slowly ā€¦

Asakkaccaį¹ denti, no sakkaccaį¹; tena bhikkhu na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. if they give carelessly, the mendicant doesnā€™t feel slighted. And they donā€™t experience pain and sadness because of that.

EvarÅ«po kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahati kulÅ«pako hotuį¹. That kind of mendicant is worthy of visiting families.

Kassapo, bhikkhave, evaį¹citto kulāni upasaį¹…kamati: Kassapa visits families with the thought:

ā€˜taį¹ kutettha labbhā parakulesuā€”ā€˜When among other families, how could I possibly think:

dentuyeva me, mā nādaį¹su; ā€œMay they give to me, may they not fail to give.

paį¹‡Ä«taƱƱeva me dentu, mā lÅ«khaį¹; May they give me fine things, not coarse.

sÄ«ghaƱƱeva me dentu, mā dandhaį¹; May they give quickly, not slowly.

Tassa ce, bhikkhave, kassapassa evaį¹cittassa kulāni upasaį¹…kamato na denti; tena kassapo na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. With such a thought, if he approaches a family and they donā€™t give, he doesnā€™t feel slighted. And he doesnā€™t experience pain and sadness because of that.

Thokaį¹ denti, no bahukaį¹; tena kassapo na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. If they give only a little ā€¦

LÅ«khaį¹ denti, no paį¹‡Ä«taį¹; tena kassapo na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. if they give coarse things ā€¦

Dandhaį¹ denti, no sÄ«ghaį¹; tena kassapo na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. if they give slowly ā€¦

Asakkaccaį¹ denti, no sakkaccaį¹; tena kassapo na sandÄ«yati; so na tatonidānaį¹ dukkhaį¹ domanassaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayati. if they give carelessly, he doesnā€™t feel slighted. And he doesnā€™t experience pain and sadness because of that.

Kassapena vā hi vo, bhikkhave, ovadissāmi yo vā panassa kassapasadiso. Ovaditehi ca pana vo tathattāya paį¹ipajjitabbanā€ti. I will exhort you with the example of Kassapa or someone like him. You should practice accordingly.ā€
