SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
āYopi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahaį¹ khÄ«į¹Äsavo tassapÄhaį¹ lÄbhasakkÄrasiloko antarÄyÄya vadÄmÄ«āti. āMendicants, possessions, honor, and popularity are an obstacle even for a mendicant who is perfected, with defilements ended.ā
Evaį¹ vutte, ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Änanda said to the Buddha,
ākissa pana, bhante, khÄ«į¹Äsavassa bhikkhuno lÄbhasakkÄrasiloko antarÄyÄyÄāti? āSir, what do possessions, honor, and popularity obstruct for a mendicant with defilements ended?ā
āYÄ hissa sÄ, Änanda, akuppÄ cetovimutti nÄhaį¹ tassÄ lÄbhasakkÄrasilokaį¹ antarÄyÄya vadÄmi. āÄnanda, I donāt say that possessions, honor, and popularity obstruct the unshakable freedom of heart.
Ye ca khvassa, Änanda, appamattassa ÄtÄpino pahitattassa viharato diį¹į¹hadhammasukhavihÄrÄ adhigatÄ tesÄhamassa lÄbhasakkÄrasilokaį¹ antarÄyÄya vadÄmi. But I do say that possessions, honor, and popularity obstruct the achievement of blissful meditations in this life for a meditator who is diligent, keen, and resolute.
Evaį¹ dÄruį¹o kho, Änanda, lÄbhasakkÄrasiloko kaį¹uko pharuso antarÄyiko anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamÄya. So brutal are possessions, honor, and popularityābitter and harsh, an obstacle to reaching the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.
TasmÄtihÄnanda, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:
āuppannaį¹ lÄbhasakkÄrasilokaį¹ pajahissÄma, na ca no uppanno lÄbhasakkÄrasiloko cittaį¹ pariyÄdÄya į¹hassatÄ«āti. āWe will give up arisen possessions, honor, and popularity, and we wonāt let them occupy our minds.ā
EvaƱhi vo, Änanda, sikkhitabbanāti. Thatās how you should train.ā
