2. Dutiyavagga Chapter Two

Pāpasāmaį¹‡erÄ«sutta A Bad Novice Nun

ā€œIdhāhaį¹, āvuso, gijjhakÅ«į¹Ä pabbatā orohanto addasaį¹ sāmaį¹‡eriį¹ vehāsaį¹ gacchantiį¹. ā€œJust now, reverend, as I was descending from Vultureā€™s Peak Mountain I saw a novice nun flying through the air.

Tassā saį¹…ghāį¹ipi ādittā sampajjalitā sajotibhÅ«tā, pattopi āditto sampajjalito sajotibhÅ«to, kāyabandhanampi ādittaį¹ sampajjalitaį¹ sajotibhÅ«taį¹, kāyopi āditto sampajjalito sajotibhÅ«to. Her outer robe, bowl, belt, and body were burning, blazing, and glowing

Sā sudaį¹ aį¹į¹assaraį¹ karoti. as she screamed in pain.

Tassa mayhaį¹, āvuso, etadahosi: It occurred to me:

ā€˜acchariyaį¹ vata bho, abbhutaį¹ vata bho. ā€˜Oh lord, how incredible, how amazing!

Evarūpopi nāma satto bhavissati. That there can be such a sentient being,

Evarūpopi nāma yakkho bhavissati. such an entity,

EvarÅ«popi nāma attabhāvapaį¹ilābho bhavissatÄ«ā€™ā€ti. such an incarnation!ā€™ā€

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: Then the Buddha said to the mendicants:

ā€œcakkhubhÅ«tā vata, bhikkhave, sāvakā viharanti; ā€œMendicants, there are disciples who live full of vision and knowledge,

Ʊāį¹‡abhÅ«tā vata, bhikkhave, sāvakā viharanti, yatra hi nāma sāvako evarÅ«paį¹ Ʊassati vā dakkhati vā sakkhiį¹ vā karissati. since a disciple knows, sees, and witnesses such a thing.

Pubbeva me sā, bhikkhave, sāmaį¹‡erÄ« diį¹į¹hā ahosi. Formerly, I too saw that novice nun, but I did not speak of it.

Api cāhaį¹ na byākāsiį¹.

AhaƱcetaį¹ byākareyyaį¹, pare ca me na saddaheyyuį¹. For if I had spoken of it others would not have believed me,

Ye me na saddaheyyuį¹, tesaį¹ taį¹ assa dÄ«gharattaį¹ ahitāya dukkhāya. which would be for their lasting harm and suffering.

Esā, bhikkhave, sāmaį¹‡erÄ« kassapassa sammāsambuddhassa pāvacane pāpasāmaį¹‡erÄ« ahosi. That female novice used to be a bad novice nun in the time of the Buddha Kassapaā€™s dispensation.

Sā tassa kammassa vipākena bahÅ«ni vassāni bahÅ«ni vassasatāni bahÅ«ni vassasahassāni bahÅ«ni vassasatasahassāni niraye paccitvā tasseva kammassa vipākāvasesena evarÅ«paį¹ attabhāvapaį¹ilābhaį¹ paį¹isaį¹vedayatÄ«ā€ti. As a result of that deed she burned in hell for many years, many hundreds, many thousands, many hundreds of thousands of years. Now she experiences the residual result of that deed in such an incarnation.ā€
