Sattisutta A Spear
SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, satti tiį¹haphalÄ. āMendicants, suppose there was a sharp-pointed spear.
Atha puriso Ägaccheyya: And a man came along and thought,
āahaį¹ imaį¹ sattiį¹ tiį¹haphalaį¹ pÄį¹inÄ vÄ muį¹į¹hinÄ vÄ paį¹ileį¹issÄmi paį¹ikoį¹į¹issÄmi paį¹ivaį¹į¹essÄmÄ«āti. āWith my hand or fist Iāll fold this sharp spear over, crumple it, and bend it back!ā
Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?
bhabbo nu kho so puriso amuį¹ sattiį¹ tiį¹haphalaį¹ pÄį¹inÄ vÄ muį¹į¹hinÄ vÄ paį¹ileį¹etuį¹ paį¹ikoį¹į¹etuį¹ paį¹ivaį¹į¹etunāti? Is that man capable of doing so?ā
āNo hetaį¹, bhanteā. āNo, sir.
āTaį¹ kissa hetuā? Why not?
āAsu hi, bhante, satti tiį¹haphalÄ na sukarÄ pÄį¹inÄ vÄ muį¹į¹hinÄ vÄ paį¹ileį¹etuį¹ paį¹ikoį¹į¹etuį¹ paį¹ivaį¹į¹etuį¹. Because itās not easy to fold that sharp spear over, crumple it, and bend it back with the hand or fist.
YÄvadeva ca pana so puriso kilamathassa vighÄtassa bhÄgÄ« assÄāti. That man will eventually get weary and frustrated.ā
āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, yassa kassaci bhikkhuno mettÄcetovimutti bhÄvitÄ bahulÄ«katÄ yÄnÄ«katÄ vatthukatÄ anuį¹į¹hitÄ paricitÄ susamÄraddhÄ, tassa ce amanusso cittaį¹ khipitabbaį¹ maƱƱeyya; āIn the same way, suppose a mendicant has developed the heartās release by love, has cultivated it, made it a vehicle and a basis, kept it up, consolidated it, and properly implemented it. Should any non-human think to overthrow their mind,
atha kho sveva amanusso kilamathassa vighÄtassa bhÄgÄ« assa. theyāll eventually get weary and frustrated.
TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:
āmettÄ no cetovimutti bhÄvitÄ bhavissati bahulÄ«katÄ yÄnÄ«katÄ vatthukatÄ anuį¹į¹hitÄ paricitÄ susamÄraddhÄāti. āWe will develop the heartās release by love. Weāll cultivate it, make it our vehicle and our basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.ā
EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanāti. Thatās how you should train.ā
