Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants,
ābhikkhavoāti. āMendicants!ā
āBhadanteāti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. āVenerable sir,ā they replied.
BhagavÄ etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

garÅ«padhÄnÄ, bhikkhave, etarahi licchavÄ« viharanti appamattÄ ÄtÄpino upÄsanasmiį¹. āMendicants, these days the Licchavis live using wood blocks as pillows, and they exercise diligently and keenly.
Tesaį¹ rÄjÄ mÄgadho ajÄtasattu vedehiputto na labhati otÄraį¹ na labhati Ärammaį¹aį¹. King AjÄtasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, finds no vulnerability, heās got no foothold.
Bhavissanti, bhikkhave, anÄgatamaddhÄnaį¹ licchavÄ« sukhumÄlÄ mudutalunahatthapÄdÄ But in the future the Licchavis will become delicate, with soft and tender hands and feet.
te mudukÄsu seyyÄsu tÅ«labibbohanÄsu yÄvasÅ«riyuggamanÄ seyyaį¹ kappissanti. Theyāll sleep on soft beds with down pillows until the sun comes up.
