āAssuttha no tumhe, bhikkhave, rattiyÄ paccÅ«sasamayaį¹ jarasiį¹
gÄlassa vassamÄnassÄāti? āMendicants, did you hear an old jackal howling at the crack of dawn?ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteā. āYes, sir.ā
āSiyÄ kho, bhikkhave, tasmiį¹ jarasiį¹
gÄle yÄ kÄci kataƱƱutÄ kataveditÄ, na tveva idhekacce sakyaputtiyapaį¹iƱƱe siyÄ yÄ kÄci kataƱƱutÄ kataveditÄ. āThere might be some gratitude and thankfulness in that old jackal, but there is none in a certain person here who claims to follow the Sakyan.
TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: So you should train like this:
ākataƱƱuno bhavissÄma katavedino; āWe will be grateful and thankful.
