Visākhasutta With Visākha, PaƱcāliā€™s Son

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā vesāliyaį¹ viharati mahāvane kÅ«į¹Ägārasālāyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā visākho paƱcālaputto upaį¹į¹hānasālāyaį¹ bhikkhÅ« dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti, poriyā vācāya vissaį¹į¹hāya anelagalāya atthassa viƱƱāpaniyā pariyāpannāya anissitāya. Now at that time Venerable Visākha, PaƱcāliā€™s son, was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants in the assembly hall with a Dhamma talk. His words were polished, clear, articulate, expressing the meaning, comprehensive, and independent.

Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹isallānā vuį¹į¹hito yena upaį¹į¹hānasālā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā paƱƱatte āsane nisÄ«di. Then in the late afternoon, the Buddha came out of retreat and went to the assembly hall. He sat down on the seat spread out,

Nisajja kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: and addressed the mendicants:

ā€œko nu kho, bhikkhave, upaį¹į¹hānasālāyaį¹ bhikkhÅ« dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti poriyā vācāya vissaį¹į¹hāya anelagalāya atthassa viƱƱāpaniyā pariyāpannāya anissitāyāā€ti? ā€œMendicants, who was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants in the assembly hall with a Dhamma talk?ā€

ā€œÄ€yasmā, bhante, visākho paƱcālaputto upaį¹į¹hānasālāyaį¹ bhikkhÅ« dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaį¹seti, poriyā vācāya vissaį¹į¹hāya anelagalāya atthassa viƱƱāpaniyā pariyāpannāya anissitāyāā€ti. ā€œSir, it was Venerable Visākha, PaƱcāliā€™s son.ā€

Atha kho bhagavā āyasmantaį¹ visākhaį¹ paƱcālaputtaį¹ āmantesi: Then the Buddha said to Visākha:

ā€œsādhu sādhu, visākha, ā€œGood, good, Visākha!

sādhu kho tvaį¹, visākha, bhikkhÅ« dhammiyā kathāya sandassesi ā€¦peā€¦ atthassa viƱƱāpaniyā pariyāpannāya anissitāyāā€ti. Itā€™s good that you educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire the mendicants in the assembly hall with a Dhamma talk, with words that are polished, clear, articulate, expressing the meaning, comprehensive, and independent.ā€

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said.

Idaį¹ vatvāna sugato athāparaį¹ etadavoca satthā: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

ā€œNābhāsamānaį¹ jānanti, ā€œThough an astute person is mixed up with fools,

missaį¹ bālehi paį¹‡įøitaį¹; they donā€™t know unless he speaks.

BhāsamānaƱca jānanti, But when he speaks they know,

desentaį¹ amataį¹ padaį¹. heā€™s teaching the state free of death.

Bhāsaye jotaye dhammaį¹, He should speak and illustrate the teaching,

paggaį¹‡he isinaį¹ dhajaį¹; holding up the banner of the seers.

Subhāsitadhajā isayo, Words well spoken are the seersā€™ banner,

dhammo hi isinaį¹ dhajoā€ti. for the teaching is the banner of the seers.ā€

Sattamaį¹.
