Tissasutta With Tissa
SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ tisso bhagavato pitucchÄputto yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di dukkhÄ« dummano assÅ«ni pavattayamÄno. Atha kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ tissaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Tissaāthe Buddhaās cousin on his fatherās sideāwent to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. He was miserable and sad, with tears flowing. Then the Buddha said to him:
ākiį¹ nu kho tvaį¹, tissa, ekamantaį¹ nisinno dukkhÄ« dummano assÅ«ni pavattayamÄnoāti? āTissa, why are you sitting there so miserable and sad, with tears flowing?ā
āTathÄ hi pana maį¹, bhante, bhikkhÅ« samantÄ vÄcÄyasannitodakena saƱjambharimakaį¹sÅ«āti. āSir, itās because the mendicants beset me on all sides with sneering and jeering.ā
āTathÄhi pana tvaį¹, tissa, vattÄ no ca vacanakkhamo; āThatās because you admonish others, but donāt accept admonition yourself.
na kho te taį¹, tissa, patirÅ«paį¹ kulaputtassa saddhÄ agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajitassa, yaį¹ tvaį¹ vattÄ no ca vacanakkhamo. As a gentleman who has gone forth out of faith from the lay life to homelessness, itās not appropriate for you to admonish others without accepting admonition yourself.
Etaį¹ kho te, tissa, patirÅ«paį¹ kulaputtassa saddhÄ agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajitassa: Itās appropriate for you to
āyaį¹ tvaį¹ vattÄ ca assa vacanakkhamo cÄāāti. admonish others and accept admonition yourself.ā
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.
Idaį¹ vatvÄna sugato athÄparaį¹ etadavoca satthÄ: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
āKiį¹ nu kujjhasi mÄ kujjhi, āWhy are you angry? Donāt be angry!
Akkodho tissa te varaį¹; Itās better to not be angry, Tissa.
KodhamÄnamakkhavinayatthaƱhi, For this spiritual life is lived
Tissa brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti. in order to remove anger, conceit, and denigration.ā
