MahÄkappinasutta With MahÄkappina
SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄkappino yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami. Then Venerable MahÄkappina went to see the Buddha.
AddasÄ kho bhagavÄ Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄkappinaį¹ dÅ«ratova Ägacchantaį¹. The Buddha saw him coming off in the distance,
DisvÄna bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: and addressed the mendicants:
āpassatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ Ägacchantaį¹ odÄtakaį¹ tanukaį¹ tuį¹
ganÄsikanāti? āMendicants, do you see that monk comingāwhite, thin, with a pointy nose?ā
āEvaį¹, bhanteā. āYes, sir.ā
āEso kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahÄnubhÄvo. āThat mendicant is very mighty and powerful.
Na ca sÄ samÄpatti sulabharÅ«pÄ yÄ tena bhikkhunÄ asamÄpannapubbÄ. Itās not easy to find an attainment that he has not already attained.
Yassa catthÄya kulaputtÄ sammadeva agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajanti tadanuttaraį¹ brahmacariyapariyosÄnaį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharatÄ«āti. And he has realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lives having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.ā
Idamavoca bhagavÄ. That is what the Buddha said.
Idaį¹ vatvÄna sugato athÄparaį¹ etadavoca satthÄ: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
āKhattiyo seį¹į¹ho janetasmiį¹, āThe aristocrat is best among people
ye gottapaį¹isÄrino; who take clan as the standard.
VijjÄcaraį¹asampanno, But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct
so seį¹į¹ho devamÄnuse. is best among gods and humans.
DivÄ tapati Ädicco, The sun blazes by day,
rattimÄbhÄti candimÄ; the moon radiates at night,
Sannaddho khattiyo tapati, the aristocrat shines in armor,
jhÄyÄ« tapati brÄhmaį¹o; and the brahmin shines in absorption.
Atha sabbamahorattiį¹, But all day and all night,
buddho tapati tejasÄāti. the Buddha blazes with glory.ā
EkÄdasamaį¹.
