Mahākappinasutta With Mahākappina

Sāvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho āyasmā mahākappino yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami. Then Venerable Mahākappina went to see the Buddha.

Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaį¹ mahākappinaį¹ dÅ«ratova āgacchantaį¹. The Buddha saw him coming off in the distance,

Disvāna bhikkhū āmantesi: and addressed the mendicants:

ā€œpassatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, etaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ āgacchantaį¹ odātakaį¹ tanukaį¹ tuį¹…ganāsikanā€ti? ā€œMendicants, do you see that monk comingā€”white, thin, with a pointy nose?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œEso kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo. ā€œThat mendicant is very mighty and powerful.

Na ca sā samāpatti sulabharÅ«pā yā tena bhikkhunā asamāpannapubbā. Itā€™s not easy to find an attainment that he has not already attained.

Yassa catthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti tadanuttaraį¹ brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharatÄ«ā€ti. And he has realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lives having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.ā€

Idamavoca bhagavā. That is what the Buddha said.

Idaį¹ vatvāna sugato athāparaį¹ etadavoca satthā: Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:

ā€œKhattiyo seį¹­į¹­ho janetasmiį¹, ā€œThe aristocrat is best among people

ye gottapaį¹­isārino; who take clan as the standard.

Vijjācaraį¹‡asampanno, But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct

so seį¹­į¹­ho devamānuse. is best among gods and humans.

Divā tapati ādicco, The sun blazes by day,

rattimābhāti candimā; the moon radiates at night,

Sannaddho khattiyo tapati, the aristocrat shines in armor,

jhāyÄ« tapati brāhmaį¹‡o; and the brahmin shines in absorption.

Atha sabbamahorattiį¹, But all day and all night,

buddho tapati tejasāā€ti. the Buddha blazes with glory.ā€

Ekādasamaį¹.
