Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ mahÄkaccÄno avantÄ«su viharati kuraraghare papÄte pabbate. At one time Venerable MahÄkaccÄna was staying in the land of the Avantis near Kuraraghara on Steep Mountain.
Atha kho hÄliddikÄni gahapati yenÄyasmÄ mahÄkaccÄno ā¦peā¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho hÄliddikÄni gahapati Äyasmantaį¹ mahÄkaccÄnaį¹ etadavoca: Then the householder HÄliddikÄni went up to Venerable MahÄkaccÄna ā¦ and asked him,
āvuttamidaį¹, bhante, bhagavatÄ sakkapaƱhe: āSir, this was said by the Buddha in āThe Questions of Sakkaā:
āye te samaį¹abrÄhmaį¹Ä taį¹hÄsaį¹
khayavimuttÄ, te accantaniį¹į¹hÄ accantayogakkhemino accantabrahmacÄrino accantapariyosÄnÄ seį¹į¹hÄ devamanussÄnanāti. āThose ascetics and brahmins who are freed due to the ending of craving have reached the ultimate goal, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate end, and are best among gods and humans.ā

āRÅ«padhÄtuyÄ kho, gahapati, yo chando yo rÄgo yÄ nandÄ« yÄ taį¹hÄ ye upayupÄdÄnÄ cetaso adhiį¹į¹hÄnÄbhinivesÄnusayÄ, tesaį¹ khayÄ virÄgÄ nirodhÄ cÄgÄ paį¹inissaggÄ ācittaį¹ suvimuttantiā vuccati. āHouseholder, consider any desire, greed, relishing, and craving for the form element; any attraction, grasping, mental fixation, insistence, and underlying tendencies. With the ending, fading away, cessation, giving away, and letting go of that, the mind is said to be āwell freedā.
