Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ā€¦peā€¦ sāvatthiyaį¹ ā€¦ At SāvatthÄ«.

tatra kho ā€¦peā€¦ etadavoca:

ā€œsamādhiį¹, bhikkhave, bhāvetha; ā€œMendicants, develop immersion.

samāhito, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. A mendicant who has immersion truly understands.

KiƱca yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti? What do they truly understand?

RÅ«passa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca, vedanāya samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca, saƱƱāya samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca, saį¹…khārānaį¹ samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca, viƱƱāį¹‡assa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca. The origin and ending of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, rÅ«passa samudayo, ko vedanāya samudayo, ko saƱƱāya samudayo, ko saį¹…khārānaį¹ samudayo, ko viƱƱāį¹‡assa samudayo? And what is the origin of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. Itā€™s when a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging.

KiƱca abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati? What do they approve, welcome, and keep clinging to?

RÅ«paį¹ abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. They approve, welcome, and keep clinging to form.

Tassa rÅ«paį¹ abhinandato abhivadato ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hato uppajjati nandÄ«. This gives rise to relishing.

Yā rÅ«pe nandÄ« tadupādānaį¹. Relishing forms is grasping.

Tassupādānapaccayā bhavo; Their grasping is a condition for continued existence.

bhavapaccayā jāti; Continued existence is a condition for rebirth.

jātipaccayā jarāmaraį¹‡aį¹ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti. Rebirth is a condition for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be.

Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. consciousness.

Tassa viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ abhinandato abhivadato ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hato uppajjati nandÄ«. This gives rise to relishing.

Yā viƱƱāį¹‡e nandÄ« tadupādānaį¹. Relishing consciousness is grasping.

Tassupādānapaccayā bhavo; Their grasping is a condition for continued existence.

bhavapaccayā jāti; Continued existence is a condition for rebirth.

jātipaccayā ā€¦peā€¦ Rebirth is a condition that gives rise to old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress.

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

ko saį¹…khārānaį¹ ā€¦ choices,

ko viƱƱāį¹‡assa atthaį¹…gamo? and consciousness?

Idha, bhikkhave, nābhinandati nābhivadati nājjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. Itā€™s when a mendicant doesnā€™t approve, welcome, or keep clinging.

KiƱca nābhinandati nābhivadati nājjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati? What donā€™t they approve, welcome, or keep clinging to?

RÅ«paį¹ nābhinandati nābhivadati nājjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. They donā€™t approve, welcome, or keep clinging to form.

Tassa rÅ«paį¹ anabhinandato anabhivadato anajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hato yā rÅ«pe nandÄ« sā nirujjhati. As a result, relishing of form ceases.

Tassa nandīnirodhā upādānanirodho; When that relishing ceases, grasping ceases.

upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho ā€¦peā€¦ When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases. ā€¦

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

Tassa nandīnirodhā upādānanirodho;
