Upādāparitassanāsutta Anxiety Because of Grasping

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œUpādāparitassanaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi anupādāaparitassanaƱca. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you how grasping leads to anxiety, and how not grasping leads to freedom from anxiety.

Taį¹ suį¹‡Ätha, sādhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€ti, kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuį¹. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this:

ā€œKathaƱca, bhikkhave, upādāparitassanā hoti? ā€œAnd how does grasping lead to anxiety?

Idha, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano ariyānaį¹ adassāvÄ« ariyadhammassa akovido ariyadhamme avinÄ«to, sappurisānaį¹ adassāvÄ« sappurisadhammassa akovido sappurisadhamme avinÄ«to Itā€™s when an unlearned ordinary person has not seen the noble ones, and is neither skilled nor trained in the teaching of the noble ones. Theyā€™ve not seen true persons, and are neither skilled nor trained in the teaching of the true persons.

rÅ«paį¹ attato samanupassati, rÅ«pavantaį¹ vā attānaį¹; attani vā rÅ«paį¹, rÅ«pasmiį¹ vā attānaį¹. They regard form as self, self as having form, form in self, or self in form.

Tassa taį¹ rÅ«paį¹ vipariį¹‡amati aƱƱathā hoti. But that form of theirs decays and perishes,

Tassa rÅ«pavipariį¹‡ÄmaƱƱathābhāvā rÅ«pavipariį¹‡Ämānuparivatti viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ hoti. and consciousness latches on to the perishing of form.

Tassa rÅ«pavipariį¹‡Ämānuparivattijā paritassanā dhammasamuppādā cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hanti. Anxieties occupy their mind, born of latching on to the perishing of form, and originating in accordance with natural principles.

Cetaso pariyādānā uttāsavā ca hoti vighātavā ca apekkhavā ca upādāya ca paritassati. So they become frightened, worried, concerned, and anxious because of grasping.

Vedanaį¹ attato samanupassati, vedanāvantaį¹ vā attānaį¹; attani vā vedanaį¹, vedanāya vā attānaį¹. They regard feeling as self ā€¦

Tassa sā vedanā vipariį¹‡amati aƱƱathā hoti.

Tassa vedanāvipariį¹‡ÄmaƱƱathābhāvā vedanāvipariį¹‡Ämānuparivatti viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ hoti.

Tassa vedanāvipariį¹‡Ämānuparivattijā paritassanā dhammasamuppādā cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hanti.

Tassa te saį¹…khārā vipariį¹‡amanti aƱƱathā honti.

Tassa saį¹…khāravipariį¹‡ÄmaƱƱathābhāvā saį¹…khāravipariį¹‡Ämānuparivatti viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ hoti.

Tassa saį¹…khāravipariį¹‡Ämānuparivattijā paritassanā dhammasamuppādā cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hanti.

Cetaso pariyādānā uttāsavā ca hoti vighātavā ca apekkhavā ca upādāya ca paritassati.

ViƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ attato samanupassati, viƱƱāį¹‡avantaį¹ vā attānaį¹; attani vā viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹, viƱƱāį¹‡asmiį¹ vā attānaį¹. They regard consciousness as self, self as having consciousness, consciousness in self, or self in consciousness.

Tassa taį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ vipariį¹‡amati aƱƱathā hoti. But that consciousness of theirs decays and perishes,

Tassa viƱƱāį¹‡avipariį¹‡ÄmaƱƱathābhāvā viƱƱāį¹‡avipariį¹‡Ämānuparivatti viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ hoti. and consciousness latches on to the perishing of consciousness.

Tassa viƱƱāį¹‡avipariį¹‡Ämānuparivattijā paritassanā dhammasamuppādā cittaį¹ pariyādāya tiį¹­į¹­hanti. Anxieties occupy their mind, born of latching on to the perishing of consciousness, and originating in accordance with natural principles.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, upādāparitassanā hoti. Thatā€™s how grasping leads to anxiety.

KathaƱca, bhikkhave, anupādāaparitassanā hoti? And how does not grasping lead to freedom from anxiety?
