Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and asked him,

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, anuseti taį¹ anumÄ«yati; ā€œMendicant, youā€™re measured against what you have an underlying tendency for,

yaį¹ anumÄ«yati tena saį¹…khaį¹ gacchati. and youā€™re defined by what youā€™re measured against.

Yaį¹ nānuseti na taį¹ anumÄ«yati; Youā€™re not measured against what you have no underlying tendency for,

yaį¹ nānumÄ«yati na tena saį¹…khaį¹ gacchatÄ«ā€ti. and youā€™re not defined by what youā€™re not measured against.ā€

ā€œAƱƱātaį¹, bhagavā, aƱƱātaį¹, sugatāā€ti. ā€œUnderstood, Blessed One! Understood, Holy One!ā€

ā€œYathā kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, bhikkhu, mayā saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaį¹ ājānāsÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how do you see the detailed meaning of my brief statement?ā€

ā€œRÅ«paƱce, bhante, anuseti taį¹ anumÄ«yati; ā€œIf you have an underlying tendency for form, youā€™re measured against that,

yaį¹ anumÄ«yati tena saį¹…khaį¹ gacchati. and youā€™re defined by what youā€™re measured against.
