Mahālisutta With Mahāli

Evaį¹ me sutaį¹ā€”So I have heard.

ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavā vesāliyaį¹ viharati mahāvane kÅ«į¹­Ägārasālāyaį¹. At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Atha kho mahāli licchavi yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahāli licchavi bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Mahāli the Licchavi went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and said to him:

ā€œPÅ«raį¹‡o, bhante, kassapo evamāha: ā€œSir, PÅ«raį¹‡a Kassapa says this:

ā€˜natthi hetu natthi paccayo sattānaį¹ saį¹…kilesāya; ā€˜There is no cause or reason for the corruption of sentient beings.

ahetÅ« appaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti. Sentient beings are corrupted without cause or reason.

Natthi hetu natthi paccayo sattānaį¹ visuddhiyā; Thereā€™s no cause or reason for the purification of sentient beings.

ahetÅ« appaccayā sattā visujjhantÄ«ā€™ti. Sentient beings are purified without cause or reason.ā€™

Idha bhagavā kimāhāā€ti? What does the Buddha say about this?ā€

ā€œAtthi, mahāli, hetu atthi paccayo sattānaį¹ saį¹…kilesāya; ā€œMahāli, there is a cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings.

sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti. Sentient beings are corrupted with cause and reason.

Atthi, mahāli, hetu, atthi paccayo sattānaį¹ visuddhiyā; There is a cause and reason for the purification of sentient beings.

sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā visujjhantÄ«ā€ti. Sentient beings are purified with cause and reason.ā€

ā€œKatamo pana, bhante, hetu katamo paccayo sattānaį¹ saį¹…kilesāya; ā€œBut sir, what is the cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings?

kathaį¹ sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissantÄ«ā€ti? How are sentient beings corrupted with cause and reason?ā€

ā€œRÅ«paƱca hidaį¹, mahāli, ekantadukkhaį¹ abhavissa dukkhānupatitaį¹ dukkhāvakkantaį¹ anavakkantaį¹ sukhena, nayidaį¹ sattā rÅ«pasmiį¹ sārajjeyyuį¹. ā€œMahāli, if form were exclusively painfulā€”soaked and steeped in pain and not steeped in pleasureā€”sentient beings wouldnā€™t be aroused by it.

Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, rÅ«paį¹ sukhaį¹ sukhānupatitaį¹ sukhāvakkantaį¹ anavakkantaį¹ dukkhena, tasmā sattā rÅ«pasmiį¹ sārajjanti; But because form is pleasurableā€”soaked and steeped in pleasure and not steeped in painā€”sentient beings are aroused by it.

sārāgā saį¹yujjanti; saį¹yogā saį¹…kilissanti. Since they are aroused by it, theyā€™re caught up in it, and so they become corrupted.

Ayaį¹ kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo sattānaį¹ saį¹…kilesāya; This is a cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings.

evaį¹ sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti. This is how sentient beings are corrupted with cause and reason.

Vedanā ca hidaį¹, mahāli, ekantadukkhā abhavissa dukkhānupatitā dukkhāvakkantā anavakkantā sukhena, nayidaį¹ sattā vedanāya sārajjeyyuį¹. If feeling ā€¦

Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, vedanā sukhā sukhānupatitā sukhāvakkantā anavakkantā dukkhena, tasmā sattā vedanāya sārajjanti;

sārāgā saį¹yujjanti;

saį¹yogā saį¹…kilissanti.

Ayampi kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo sattānaį¹ saį¹…kilesāya.

Evampi sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti.

SaƱƱā ca hidaį¹, mahāli ā€¦peā€¦ perception ā€¦

saį¹…khārā ca hidaį¹, mahāli, ekantadukkhā abhavissaį¹su dukkhānupatitā dukkhāvakkantā anavakkantā sukhena, nayidaį¹ sattā saį¹…khāresu sārajjeyyuį¹. choices ā€¦

Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, saį¹…khārā sukhā sukhānupatitā sukhāvakkantā anavakkantā dukkhena, tasmā sattā saį¹…khāresu sārajjanti;

sārāgā saį¹yujjanti;

saį¹yogā saį¹…kilissanti.

Ayampi kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo sattānaį¹ saį¹…kilesāya.

Evampi sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti.

ViƱƱāį¹‡aƱca hidaį¹, mahāli, ekantadukkhaį¹ abhavissa dukkhānupatitaį¹ dukkhāvakkantaį¹ anavakkantaį¹ sukhena, nayidaį¹ sattā viƱƱāį¹‡asmiį¹ sārajjeyyuį¹. consciousness were exclusively painfulā€”soaked and steeped in pain and not steeped in pleasureā€”sentient beings wouldnā€™t be aroused by it.

Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ sukhaį¹ sukhānupatitaį¹ sukhāvakkantaį¹ anavakkantaį¹ dukkhena, tasmā sattā viƱƱāį¹‡asmiį¹ sārajjanti; But because consciousness is pleasurableā€”soaked and steeped in pleasure and not steeped in painā€”sentient beings are aroused by it.

sārāgā saį¹yujjanti; saį¹yogā saį¹…kilissanti. Since they are aroused by it, theyā€™re caught up in it, and so they become corrupted.

Ayampi kho, mahāli, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo sattānaį¹ saį¹…kilesāya. This is a cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings.

Evampi sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissantÄ«ā€ti. This is how sentient beings are corrupted with cause and reason.ā€

Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, rÅ«paį¹ dukkhaį¹ dukkhānupatitaį¹ dukkhāvakkantaį¹ anavakkantaį¹ sukhena, tasmā sattā rÅ«pasmiį¹ nibbindanti; But because form is painfulā€”soaked and steeped in pain and not steeped in pleasureā€”sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it.

nibbindaį¹ virajjanti; virāgā visujjhanti. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they are purified.

Ayaį¹ kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo, sattānaį¹ visuddhiyā. This is a cause and reason for the purification of sentient beings.

Evaį¹ sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā visujjhanti. This is how sentient beings are purified with cause and reason.

Vedanā ca hidaį¹, mahāli, ekantasukhā abhavissa ā€¦peā€¦ If feeling ā€¦

viƱƱāį¹‡aƱca hidaį¹, mahāli, ekantasukhaį¹ abhavissa sukhānupatitaį¹ sukhāvakkantaį¹ anavakkantaį¹ dukkhena, nayidaį¹ sattā viƱƱāį¹‡asmiį¹ nibbindeyyuį¹. consciousness was perfectly pleasurableā€”soaked and steeped in pleasure and not steeped in painā€”sentient beings wouldnā€™t grow disillusioned with it.
