Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and asked him,

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu ā€¦peā€¦ ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œYo kho, bhikkhu, anattā; tatra te chando pahātabboā€ti. ā€œMendicant, give up desire for what is not-self.ā€

ā€œAƱƱātaį¹, bhagavā, aƱƱātaį¹, sugatāā€ti. ā€œUnderstood, Blessed One! Understood, Holy One!ā€

ā€œYathā kathaį¹ pana tvaį¹, bhikkhu, mayā saį¹…khittena bhāsitassa vitthārena atthaį¹ ājānāsÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how do you see the detailed meaning of my brief statement?ā€
