Surādhasutta With Surādha

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho āyasmā surādho bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Surādha said to the Buddha:

ā€œkathaį¹ nu kho, bhante, jānato kathaį¹ passato imasmiƱca saviƱƱāį¹‡ake kāye bahiddhā ca sabbanimittesu ahaį¹…kāramamaį¹…kāramānāpagataį¹ mānasaį¹ hoti, vidhā samatikkantaį¹ santaį¹ suvimuttanā€ti? ā€œSir, how does one know and see so that the mind is rid of I-making, mine-making, and conceit for this conscious body and all external stimuli; and going beyond discrimination, itā€™s peaceful and well freed?ā€

ā€œYaį¹ kiƱci, surādha, rÅ«paį¹ atÄ«tānāgatapaccuppannaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ yaį¹ dÅ«re santike vā, sabbaį¹ rÅ«paį¹: ā€˜netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attāā€™ti evametaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya disvā anupādāvimutto hoti. ā€œSurādha, one is freed by not grasping having truly seen any kind of form at allā€”past, future, or present; internal or external; solid or subtle; inferior or superior; far or near: all formā€”with right understanding: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.ā€™

Evaį¹ kho, surādha, jānato evaį¹ passato imasmiƱca saviƱƱāį¹‡ake kāye, bahiddhā ca sabbanimittesu ahaį¹…kāramamaį¹…kāramānāpagataį¹ mānasaį¹ hoti vidhā samatikkantaį¹ santaį¹ suvimuttanā€ti ā€¦peā€¦ Thatā€™s how to know and see so that the mind is rid of I-making, mine-making, and conceit for this conscious body and all external stimuli; and going beyond discrimination, itā€™s peaceful and well freed.ā€ ā€¦

aƱƱataro ca panāyasmā surādho arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable Surādha became one of the perfected.

UpādiyamaƱƱamānā,

Athābhinandamāno ca;

Aniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ anattā ca,

Anattaniyaį¹ rajanÄ«yasaį¹‡į¹­hitaį¹;

Rādhasurādhena te dasāti.
