ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, nadÄ« pabbateyyā ohārinÄ« dÅ«raį¹…gamā sÄ«ghasotā. Tassā ubhosu tÄ«resu kāsā cepi jātā assu, te naį¹ ajjholambeyyuį¹; kusā cepi jātā assu, te naį¹ ajjholambeyyuį¹; pabbajā cepi jātā assu, te naį¹ ajjholambeyyuį¹; bÄ«raį¹‡Ä cepi jātā assu, te naį¹ ajjholambeyyuį¹; rukkhā cepi jātā assu, te naį¹ ajjholambeyyuį¹. Tassā puriso sotena vuyhamāno kāse cepi gaį¹‡heyya, te palujjeyyuį¹. So tatonidānaį¹ anayabyasanaį¹ āpajjeyya. Kuse cepi gaį¹‡heyya, pabbaje cepi gaį¹‡heyya, bÄ«raį¹‡e cepi gaį¹‡heyya, rukkhe cepi gaį¹‡heyya, te palujjeyyuį¹. So tatonidānaį¹ anayabyasanaį¹ āpajjeyya. ā€œSuppose, mendicants, there was a mountain river that flowed swiftly, going far, carrying all before it. If wild sugarcane, kusa grass, reeds, vetiver, or trees grew on either bank, theyā€™d overhang the river. And if a person who was being swept along by the current grabbed the wild sugarcane, kusa grass, reeds, vetiver, or trees, itā€™d break off, and theyā€™d come to ruin because of that.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano ariyānaį¹ adassāvÄ« ariyadhammassa akovido ariyadhamme avinÄ«to, sappurisānaį¹ adassāvÄ« sappurisadhammassa akovido sappurisadhamme avinÄ«to In the same way, an unlearned ordinary person has not seen the noble ones, and is neither skilled nor trained in the teaching of the noble ones. Theyā€™ve not seen true persons, and are neither skilled nor trained in the teaching of the true persons.

rÅ«paį¹ attato samanupassati, rÅ«pavantaį¹ vā attānaį¹; attani vā rÅ«paį¹, rÅ«pasmiį¹ vā attānaį¹. They regard form as self, self as having form, form in self, or self in form.

Tassa taį¹ rÅ«paį¹ palujjati. But their form breaks off,

So tatonidānaį¹ anayabyasanaį¹ āpajjati. and they come to ruin because of that.
