Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œAnamataggoyaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹sāro. ā€œMendicants, transmigration has no known beginning.

Pubbā koį¹­i na paƱƱāyati avijjānÄ«varaį¹‡Änaį¹ sattānaį¹ taį¹‡hāsaį¹yojanānaį¹ sandhāvataį¹ saį¹sarataį¹. No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, sā gaddulabaddho daįø·he khÄ«le vā thambhe vā upanibaddho. So gacchati cepi tameva khÄ«laį¹ vā thambhaį¹ vā upagacchati; tiį¹­į¹­hati cepi tameva khÄ«laį¹ vā thambhaį¹ vā upatiį¹­į¹­hati; nisÄ«dati cepi tameva khÄ«laį¹ vā thambhaį¹ vā upanisÄ«dati; nipajjati cepi tameva khÄ«laį¹ vā thambhaį¹ vā upanipajjati. Suppose a dog on a leash was tethered to a strong post or pillar. Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, it stays right beside that post or pillar.

Evameva kho, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜etaį¹ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attāā€™ti samanupassati. In the same way, an unlearned ordinary person regards form like this: ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my self.ā€™

Vedanaį¹ ā€¦ They regard feeling ā€¦

saƱƱaį¹ ā€¦ perception ā€¦

saį¹…khāre ā€¦ choices ā€¦

viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€˜etaį¹ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attāā€™ti samanupassati. consciousness like this: ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my self.ā€™

So gacchati cepi ime paƱcupādānakkhandhe upagacchati; When walking, they walk right beside the five grasping aggregates.

tiį¹­į¹­hati cepi ime paƱcupādānakkhandhe upatiį¹­į¹­hati; When standing ā€¦

nisÄ«dati cepi ime paƱcupādānakkhandhe upanisÄ«dati; sitting ā€¦

nipajjati cepi ime paƱcupādānakkhandhe upanipajjati. lying down, they lie down right beside the five grasping aggregates.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, abhikkhaį¹‡aį¹ sakaį¹ cittaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: So you should regularly check your own mind:

ā€˜dÄ«gharattamidaį¹ cittaį¹ saį¹…kiliį¹­į¹­haį¹ rāgena dosena mohenāā€™ti. ā€˜For a long time this mind has been corrupted by greed, hate, and delusion.ā€™

Cittasaį¹…kilesā, bhikkhave, sattā saį¹…kilissanti; Sentient beings are corrupted because the mind is corrupted.

cittavodānā sattā visujjhanti. Sentient beings are purified because the mind is purified.

Diį¹­į¹­haį¹ vo, bhikkhave, caraį¹‡aį¹ nāma cittanā€ti? Mendicants, have you seen the picture called ā€˜Conductā€™?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œTampi kho, bhikkhave, caraį¹‡aį¹ nāma cittaį¹ citteneva cittitaį¹. Tenapi kho, bhikkhave, caraį¹‡ena cittena cittaƱƱeva cittataraį¹. ā€œThat picture was elaborated by the mind, but the mind is even more elaborate than that.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, abhikkhaį¹‡aį¹ sakaį¹ cittaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: So you should regularly check your own mind:

Nāhaį¹, bhikkhave, aƱƱaį¹ ekanikāyampi samanupassāmi evaį¹ cittaį¹ yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, tiracchānagatā pāį¹‡Ä. I donā€™t see any other order of beings as elaborate as the animal realm.

tepi kho, bhikkhave, tiracchānagatā pāį¹‡Ä citteneva cittitā, tehipi kho, bhikkhave, tiracchānagatehi pāį¹‡ehi cittaƱƱeva cittataraį¹. The creatures in the animal realm were elaborated by the mind, but the mind is even more elaborate than that.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, abhikkhaį¹‡aį¹ sakaį¹ cittaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: So you should regularly check your own mind:

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, rajako vā cittakārako vā rajanāya vā lākhāya vā haliddiyā vā nÄ«liyā vā maƱjiį¹­į¹­hāya vā suparimaį¹­į¹­he phalake vā bhittiyā vā dussapaį¹­į¹­e vā itthirÅ«paį¹ vā purisarÅ«paį¹ vā abhinimmineyya sabbaį¹…gapaccaį¹…giį¹; Suppose an artist or painter had some dye, red lac, turmeric, indigo, or rose madder. And on a polished plank or a wall or a canvas theyā€™d create the form of a woman or a man, whole in its major and minor limbs.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«paƱƱeva abhinibbattento abhinibbatteti, vedanaƱƱeva ā€¦peā€¦ saƱƱaƱƱeva ā€¦ saį¹…khāreyeva ā€¦ viƱƱāį¹‡aƱƱeva abhinibbattento abhinibbatteti. In the same way, when an unlearned ordinary person creates a future life, all they create is form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.

Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, What do you think, mendicants?

rÅ«paį¹ niccaį¹ vā aniccaį¹ vāā€ti? Is form permanent or impermanent?ā€

ā€œAniccaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€

ā€œVedanā ā€¦ ā€œIs feeling ā€¦

saį¹…khārā ā€¦ choices ā€¦

nāparaį¹ itthattāyāti pajānātÄ«ā€ti. They understand: ā€˜ā€¦ there is nothing further for this place.ā€™ā€
