ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, antā. ā€œMendicants, there are these four sides.

Katame cattāro? What four?

Sakkāyanto, sakkāyasamudayanto, sakkāyanirodhanto, sakkāyanirodhagāminippaį¹ipadanto. The side of substantial reality, the side of the origin of substantial reality, the side of the cessation of substantial reality, and the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of substantial reality.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkāyanto? And what is the side of substantial reality?

PaƱcupādānakkhandhātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. It should be said: the five grasping aggregates.

Katame paƱca? What five?

Seyyathidaį¹ā€”rÅ«pupādānakkhandho, vedanupādānakkhandho, saƱƱupādānakkhandho, saį¹…khārupādānakkhandho, viƱƱāį¹‡upādānakkhandhoā€”That is, the grasping aggregates of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.

ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkāyanto. This is called the side of substantial reality.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkāyasamudayanto? And what is the side of the origin of substantial reality?

Yāyaį¹ taį¹‡hā ponobhavikā nandirāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinÄ«, seyyathidaį¹ā€”Itā€™s the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure wherever it lands. That is,

kāmataį¹‡hā, bhavataį¹‡hā, vibhavataį¹‡hā. craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkāyasamudayanto. This is called the side of the origin of substantial reality.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkāyanirodhanto? And what is the side of the cessation of substantial reality?

Yo tassāyeva taį¹‡hāya asesavirāganirodho cāgo paį¹inissaggo mutti anālayoā€”Itā€™s the fading away and cessation of that very same craving with nothing left over; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not clinging to it.

ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkāyanirodhanto. This is called the side of the cessation of substantial reality.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkāyanirodhagāminippaį¹ipadanto? And what is the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of substantial reality?

Ayameva ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹…giko maggo. It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

Seyyathidaį¹ā€”sammādiį¹į¹hi ā€¦peā€¦ sammāsamādhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkāyanirodhagāminippaį¹ipadanto. This is called the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of substantial reality.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro antāā€ti. These are the four sides.ā€

Paį¹hamaį¹.
