āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, antÄ. āMendicants, there are these four sides.
Katame cattÄro? What four?
SakkÄyanto, sakkÄyasamudayanto, sakkÄyanirodhanto, sakkÄyanirodhagÄminippaį¹ipadanto. The side of substantial reality, the side of the origin of substantial reality, the side of the cessation of substantial reality, and the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of substantial reality.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkÄyanto? And what is the side of substantial reality?
PaƱcupÄdÄnakkhandhÄtissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. It should be said: the five grasping aggregates.
Katame paƱca? What five?
Seyyathidaį¹ārÅ«pupÄdÄnakkhandho, vedanupÄdÄnakkhandho, saƱƱupÄdÄnakkhandho, saį¹
khÄrupÄdÄnakkhandho, viƱƱÄį¹upÄdÄnakkhandhoāThat is, the grasping aggregates of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.
ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkÄyanto. This is called the side of substantial reality.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkÄyasamudayanto? And what is the side of the origin of substantial reality?
YÄyaį¹ taį¹hÄ ponobhavikÄ nandirÄgasahagatÄ tatratatrÄbhinandinÄ«, seyyathidaį¹āItās the craving that leads to future lives, mixed up with relishing and greed, taking pleasure wherever it lands. That is,
kÄmataį¹hÄ, bhavataį¹hÄ, vibhavataį¹hÄ. craving for sensual pleasures, craving to continue existence, and craving to end existence.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkÄyasamudayanto. This is called the side of the origin of substantial reality.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkÄyanirodhanto? And what is the side of the cessation of substantial reality?
Yo tassÄyeva taį¹hÄya asesavirÄganirodho cÄgo paį¹inissaggo mutti anÄlayoāItās the fading away and cessation of that very same craving with nothing left over; giving it away, letting it go, releasing it, and not clinging to it.
ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkÄyanirodhanto. This is called the side of the cessation of substantial reality.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sakkÄyanirodhagÄminippaį¹ipadanto? And what is the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of substantial reality?
Ayameva ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹
giko maggo. It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:
Seyyathidaį¹āsammÄdiį¹į¹hi ā¦peā¦ sammÄsamÄdhi. right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sakkÄyanirodhagÄminippaį¹ipadanto. This is called the side of the practice that leads to the cessation of substantial reality.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattÄro antÄāti. These are the four sides.ā
