AvijjÄsutta Ignorance
SÄvatthinidÄnaį¹. At SÄvatthÄ«.
Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami ā¦peā¦ Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha
ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and said to him:
āāavijjÄ, avijjÄāti, bhante, vuccati. āSir, they speak of this thing called āignoranceā.
KatamÄ nu kho, bhante, avijjÄ; What is ignorance?
kittÄvatÄ ca avijjÄgato hotÄ«āti? And how is an ignorant person defined?ā
āIdha, bhikkhu, assutavÄ puthujjano rÅ«paį¹ nappajÄnÄti, rÅ«pasamudayaį¹ nappajÄnÄti, rÅ«panirodhaį¹ nappajÄnÄti, rÅ«panirodhagÄminiį¹ paį¹ipadaį¹ nappajÄnÄti; āMendicant, itās when an unlearned ordinary person doesnāt understand form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.
