Avijjāsutta Ignorance

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha

ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and said to him:

ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjāā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignoranceā€™.

Katamā nu kho, bhante, avijjā; What is ignorance?

kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«paį¹ nappajānāti, rÅ«pasamudayaį¹ nappajānāti, rÅ«panirodhaį¹ nappajānāti, rÅ«panirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ nappajānāti; ā€œMendicant, itā€™s when an unlearned ordinary person doesnā€™t understand form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

vedanaį¹ nappajānāti ā€¦ They donā€™t understand feeling ā€¦

saį¹…khāre nappajānāti ā€¦peā€¦ choices ā€¦

viƱƱāį¹‡anirodhagāminiį¹ paį¹­ipadaį¹ nappajānāti. consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu, avijjā; This is called ignorance.

ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā€
