Samudayadhammasutta Liable To Originate

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjāā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignoranceā€™.

Katamā nu kho, bhante, avijjā; What is ignorance?

kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, assutavā puthujjano samudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜samudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti; ā€œMendicant, itā€™s when an unlearned ordinary person doesnā€™t truly understand form, which is liable to originate, as form which is liable to originate.

vayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜vayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti; They donā€™t truly understand form, which is liable to vanish, as form which is liable to vanish.

samudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜samudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti. They donā€™t truly understand form, which is liable to originate and vanish, as form which is liable to originate and vanish.

Samudayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€˜samudayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡anā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti; consciousness, which is liable to originate, as consciousness which is liable to originate.

vayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€˜vayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡anā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti; They donā€™t truly understand consciousness, which is liable to vanish, as consciousness which is liable to vanish.

samudayavayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€˜samudayavayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡anā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti. They donā€™t truly understand consciousness, which is liable to originate and vanish, as consciousness which is liable to originate and vanish.

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu, avijjā; This is called ignorance.

ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, the mendicant said to the Buddha:

ā€œā€˜vijjā, vijjāā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜knowledgeā€™.

Katamā nu kho, bhante, vijjā; What is knowledge?

kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is a knowledgeable person defined?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, sutavā ariyasāvako samudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜samudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti; ā€œMendicant, itā€™s when a learned noble disciple truly understands form, which is liable to originate, as form which is liable to originate.

vayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜vayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti; They truly understand form, which is liable to vanish, as form which is liable to vanish.

samudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜samudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. They truly understand form, which is liable to originate and vanish, as form which is liable to originate and vanish.

Samudayadhammaį¹ vedanaį¹ ā€˜samudayadhammā vedanāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti; They truly understand feeling ā€¦

vayadhammaį¹ vedanaį¹ ā€˜vayadhammā vedanāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti;

Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhu, vijjā; This is called knowledge.

ettāvatā ca vijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how a knowledgeable person is defined.ā€
