Tatiyasamudayadhammasutta Liable To Originate (3rd)

Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ āyasmā ca sāriputto āyasmā ca mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko bārāį¹‡asiyaį¹ viharanti isipatane migadāye ā€¦peā€¦ At one time Venerable Sāriputta and Venerable Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana. ā€¦

ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā mahākoį¹­į¹­hiko āyasmantaį¹ sāriputtaį¹ etadavoca: Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita said to Sāriputta:

ā€œā€˜vijjā, vijjāā€™ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. ā€œReverend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ā€˜knowledgeā€™.

Katamā nu kho, āvuso, vijjā; What is knowledge?

kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is a knowledgeable person defined?ā€

ā€œIdhāvuso, sutavā ariyasāvako samudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜samudayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti; vayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ samudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«paį¹ ā€˜samudayavayadhammaį¹ rÅ«panā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti; ā€œReverend, itā€™s when a learned noble disciple truly understands form, which is liable to originate ā€¦ liable to vanish ā€¦ liable to originate and vanish, as form which is liable to originate and vanish.

samudayadhammaį¹ vedanaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ samudayavayadhammā vedanā ā€¦ They truly understand feeling ā€¦

samudayadhamme saį¹…khāre ā€¦ vayadhamme saį¹…khāre ā€¦ samudayavayadhamme saį¹…khāre ā€˜samudayavayadhammā saį¹…khārāā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. choices ā€¦

Samudayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦ vayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦ samudayavayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€˜samudayavayadhammaį¹ viƱƱāį¹‡anā€™ti yathābhÅ«taį¹ pajānāti. consciousness, which is liable to originate ā€¦ liable to vanish ā€¦ liable to originate and vanish, as consciousness which is liable to originate and vanish.

Ayaį¹ vuccatāvuso, vijjā; This is called knowledge.

ettāvatā ca vijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how a knowledgeable person is defined.ā€
