Bārāį¹‡asiyaį¹ viharanti isipatane migadāye. At Varanasi.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto sāyanhasamayaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦

ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaį¹ mahākoį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ etadavoca: Sāriputta said to Mahākoį¹­į¹­hita:

ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjāā€™ti, āvuso koį¹­į¹­hika, vuccati. ā€œReverend Koį¹­į¹­hita, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignoranceā€™.

Katamā nu kho, āvuso, avijjā; What is ignorance?

kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti? And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€

ā€œIdhāvuso, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«passa assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraį¹‡aƱca yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti. ā€œReverend, an unlearned ordinary person doesnā€™t truly understand the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to form,

Vedanāya ā€¦peā€¦ feeling,

saƱƱāya ā€¦ perception,

saį¹…khārānaį¹ ā€¦ choices,

viƱƱāį¹‡assa assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraį¹‡aƱca yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti. and consciousness.

Ayaį¹ vuccatāvuso, avijjā; This is called ignorance.

ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti. And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaį¹ mahākoį¹­į¹­hikaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, Venerable Sāriputta said to him:
