Ānandasutta With Ānanda

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā ā€¦peā€¦ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, ānanda, ā€œWhat do you think, Ānanda?

rÅ«paį¹ niccaį¹ vā aniccaį¹ vāā€ti? Is form permanent or impermanent?ā€

ā€œAniccaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ panāniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ vā taį¹ sukhaį¹ vāā€ti? ā€œBut if itā€™s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?ā€

ā€œDukkhaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œSuffering, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ panāniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ vipariį¹‡Ämadhammaį¹, kallaį¹ nu taį¹ samanupassituį¹: ā€œBut if itā€™s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus:

ā€˜etaį¹ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attāā€™ā€ti? ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my selfā€™?ā€

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

Tassa uparipaį¹‡į¹‡Äsakassa vagguddānaį¹

Anto dhammakathikā vijjā,

kukkuįø·aį¹ diį¹­į¹­hipaƱcamaį¹;

Tatiyo paį¹‡į¹‡Äsako vutto,

nipātoti pavuccatīti.
