Samaį¹‡asutta Ascetics and Brahmins

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho āyasmantaį¹ rādhaį¹ bhagavā etadavoca: When Venerable Rādha was seated to one side, the Buddha said to him:

ā€œpaƱcime, rādha, upādānakkhandhā. ā€œRādha, there are these five grasping aggregates.

Katame paƱca? What five?

RÅ«pupādānakkhandho, vedanupādānakkhandho, saƱƱupādānakkhandho, saį¹…khārupādānakkhandho, viƱƱāį¹‡upādānakkhandho. The grasping aggregates of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.

Ye hi keci, rādha, samaį¹‡Ä vā brāhmaį¹‡Ä vā imesaį¹ paƱcannaį¹ upādānakkhandhānaį¹ assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraį¹‡aƱca yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānanti; There are ascetics and brahmins who donā€™t truly understand these five grasping aggregatesā€™ gratification, drawback, and escape.

I donā€™t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables donā€™t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and donā€™t live having realized it with their own insight.
