Nirodhasamāpattisutta The Attainment of Cessation

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto ā€¦peā€¦. Venerable Ānanda saw Venerable Sāriputta ā€¦

ā€œIdhāhaį¹, āvuso, sabbaso nevasaƱƱānāsaƱƱāyatanaį¹ samatikkamma saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaį¹ upasampajja viharāmi. ā€œReverend, going totally beyond the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, I entered and remained in the cessation of perception and feeling.

Tassa mayhaį¹, āvuso, na evaį¹ hoti: But it didnā€™t occur to me:

ā€˜ahaį¹ saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaį¹ samāpajjāmÄ«ā€™ti vā ā€˜ahaį¹ saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaį¹ samāpannoā€™ti vā ā€˜ahaį¹ saƱƱāvedayitanirodhā vuį¹­į¹­hitoā€™ti vāā€ti. ā€˜I am entering the cessation of perception and feelingā€™ or ā€˜I have entered the cessation of perception and feelingā€™ or ā€˜I am emerging from the cessation of perception and feelingā€™.ā€

Tathā hi panāyasmato sāriputtassa dÄ«gharattaį¹ ahaį¹…kāramamaį¹…kāramānānusayā susamÅ«hatā. ā€œThat must be because Venerable Sāriputta has long ago totally eradicated I-making, mine-making, and the underlying tendency to conceit.

Tasmā āyasmato sāriputtassa na evaį¹ hoti: Thatā€™s why it didnā€™t occur to you:

ā€œā€˜ahaį¹ saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaį¹ samāpajjāmÄ«ā€™ti vā ā€˜ahaį¹ saƱƱāvedayitanirodhaį¹ samāpannoā€™ti vā ā€˜ahaį¹ saƱƱāvedayitanirodhā vuį¹­į¹­hitoā€™ti vāā€ti. ā€˜I am entering the cessation of perception and feelingā€™ or ā€˜I have entered the cessation of perception and feelingā€™ or ā€˜I am emerging from the cessation of perception and feelingā€™.ā€
