Catutthauposathasutta Sabbath (4th)

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:

ā€œko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena mā€™idhekacce opapātikā nāgā uposathaį¹ upavasanti vossaį¹į¹hakāyā ca bhavantÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why some spontaneously-born dragons keep the sabbath, having transformed their bodies?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, ekaccānaį¹ opapātikānaį¹ nāgānaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: ā€œMendicant, itā€™s when some spontaneously-born dragons think:

ā€˜mayaį¹ kho pubbe kāyena dvayakārino ahumha, vācāya dvayakārino, manasā dvayakārino. ā€˜In the past we did both kinds of deeds by body, speech, and mind.

Te mayaį¹ kāyena dvayakārino, vācāya dvayakārino, manasā dvayakārino, kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä opapātikānaį¹ nāgānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapannā. When the body broke up, after death, we were reborn in the company of the spontaneously-born dragons.

Sacajja mayaį¹ kāyena sucaritaį¹ careyyāma, vācāya ā€¦ manasā sucaritaį¹ careyyāma, evaį¹ mayaį¹ kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjeyyāma. If today we do good things by body, speech, and mind, when the body breaks up, after death, we may be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm.

Handa mayaį¹ etarahi kāyena sucaritaį¹ carāma, vācāya ā€¦ manasā sucaritaį¹ carāmāā€™ti. Come, let us do good things by way of body, speech, and mind.ā€™

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo, yena mā€™idhekacce opapātikā nāgā uposathaį¹ upavasanti vossaį¹į¹hakāyā ca bhavantÄ«ā€ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why some spontaneously-born dragons keep the sabbath, having transformed their bodies.ā€
