1. Nāgavagga 1. Dragons

Catutthasutasutta Theyā€™ve Heard (4th)

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:

ā€œko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä opapātikānaį¹ nāgānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the spontaneously-born dragons?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, ekacco kāyena dvayakārÄ« hoti, vācāya dvayakārÄ«, manasā dvayakārÄ«. ā€œMendicant, itā€™s when someone does both kinds of deeds by body, speech, and mind.

Tassa sutaį¹ hoti: And theyā€™ve heard:

ā€˜opapātikā nāgā dÄ«ghāyukā vaį¹‡į¹‡avanto sukhabahulāā€™ti. ā€˜The spontaneously-born dragons are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.ā€™

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: They think:

ā€˜aho vatāhaį¹ kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä opapātikānaį¹ nāgānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjeyyanā€™ti. ā€˜If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the spontaneously-born dragons!ā€™

So kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä opapātikānaį¹ nāgānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in the company of the spontaneously-born dragons.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo, yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä opapātikānaį¹ nāgānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€ti. This is the cause, this is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the spontaneously-born dragons.ā€
