MÅ«lagandhadÄtÄsutta A Giver of Fragrant Roots

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:
āko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena midhekacco kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä mÅ«lagandhe adhivatthÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«āti? āSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots?ā
āIdha, bhikkhu, ekacco kÄyena sucaritaį¹ carati, vÄcÄya sucaritaį¹ carati, manasÄ sucaritaį¹ carati. āMendicant, itās when someone does good things by way of body, speech, and mind.
Tassa sutaį¹ hoti: And theyāve heard:
āmÅ«lagandhe adhivatthÄ devÄ dÄ«ghÄyukÄ vaį¹į¹avanto sukhabahulÄāti. āThe gods who live in fragrant roots are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.ā
Tassa evaį¹ hoti: They think:
āaho vatÄhaį¹ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä mÅ«lagandhe adhivatthÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjeyyanāti. āIf only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots!ā
So dÄtÄ hoti mÅ«lagandhÄnaį¹. They give gifts of fragrant roots.
So kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä mÅ«lagandhe adhivatthÄnaį¹ devÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots.
Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, hetu ā¦peā¦ This is the cause, this is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots.ā
