Mūlagandhadātāsutta A Giver of Fragrant Roots

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:

ā€œko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä mÅ«lagandhe adhivatthānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots?ā€

ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, ekacco kāyena sucaritaį¹ carati, vācāya sucaritaį¹ carati, manasā sucaritaį¹ carati. ā€œMendicant, itā€™s when someone does good things by way of body, speech, and mind.

Tassa sutaį¹ hoti: And theyā€™ve heard:

ā€˜mÅ«lagandhe adhivatthā devā dÄ«ghāyukā vaį¹‡į¹‡avanto sukhabahulāā€™ti. ā€˜The gods who live in fragrant roots are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.ā€™

Tassa evaį¹ hoti: They think:

ā€˜aho vatāhaį¹ kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä mÅ«lagandhe adhivatthānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjeyyanā€™ti. ā€˜If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots!ā€™

So dātā hoti mÅ«lagandhānaį¹. They give gifts of fragrant roots.

So kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä mÅ«lagandhe adhivatthānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjati. When their body breaks up, after death, theyā€™re reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, hetu ā€¦peā€¦ This is the cause, this is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods who live in fragrant roots.ā€

yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraį¹ maraį¹‡Ä mÅ«lagandhe adhivatthānaį¹ devānaį¹ sahabyataį¹ upapajjatÄ«ā€ti.
