Paį¹hamapubbesambodhasutta Before My Awakening (Interior)

Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

ā€œPubbeva me, bhikkhave, sambodhā anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi: ā€œMendicants, before my awakeningā€”when I was still unawakened but intent on awakeningā€”I thought:

ā€˜ko nu kho cakkhussa assādo, ko ādÄ«navo, kiį¹ nissaraį¹‡aį¹? ā€˜Whatā€™s the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to the eye ā€¦

Ko sotassa ā€¦peā€¦ ear ā€¦

ko ghānassa ā€¦ nose ā€¦

ko jivhāya ā€¦ tongue ā€¦

ko kāyassa ā€¦ body ā€¦

ko manassa assādo, ko ādÄ«navo, kiį¹ nissaraį¹‡anā€™ti? and mind?ā€™

Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me:

ā€˜yaį¹ kho cakkhuį¹ paį¹icca uppajjati sukhaį¹ somanassaį¹, ayaį¹ cakkhussa assādo. ā€˜The pleasure and happiness that arise from the eye: this is its gratification.

Yaį¹ cakkhuį¹ aniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ vipariį¹‡Ämadhammaį¹, ayaį¹ cakkhussa ādÄ«navo. That the eye is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.

Yo cakkhusmiį¹ chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaį¹, idaį¹ cakkhussa nissaraį¹‡aį¹. Removing and giving up desire and greed for the eye: this is its escape.

Yaį¹ sotaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ The pleasure and happiness that arise from the ear ā€¦

yaį¹ ghānaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ nose ā€¦

yaį¹ jivhaį¹ paį¹icca uppajjati sukhaį¹ somanassaį¹, ayaį¹ jivhāya assādo. tongue ā€¦

Yaį¹ jivhā aniccā dukkhā vipariį¹‡Ämadhammā, ayaį¹ jivhāya ādÄ«navo.

Yo jivhāya chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaį¹, idaį¹ jivhāya nissaraį¹‡aį¹.

Yaį¹ kāyaį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ body ā€¦

yaį¹ manaį¹ paį¹icca uppajjati sukhaį¹ somanassaį¹, ayaį¹ manassa assādo. mind: this is its gratification.

Yaį¹ mano anicco dukkho vipariį¹‡Ämadhammo, ayaį¹ manassa ādÄ«navo. That the mind is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.

Yo manasmiį¹ chandarāgavinayo chandarāgappahānaį¹, idaį¹ manassa nissaraį¹‡anā€™ti. Removing and giving up desire and greed for the mind: this is its escape.ā€™

YāvakÄ«vaƱcāhaį¹, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ channaį¹ ajjhattikānaį¹ āyatanānaį¹ evaį¹ assādaƱca assādato, ādÄ«navaƱca ādÄ«navato, nissaraį¹‡aƱca nissaraį¹‡ato yathābhÅ«taį¹ nābbhaƱƱāsiį¹, neva tāvāhaį¹, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡iyā pajāya sadevamanussāya ā€˜anuttaraį¹ sammāsambodhiį¹ abhisambuddhoā€™ti paccaƱƱāsiį¹. As long as I didnā€™t truly understand these six interior sense fieldsā€™ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I didnā€™t announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

Yato ca khvāhaį¹, bhikkhave, imesaį¹ channaį¹ ajjhattikānaį¹ āyatanānaį¹ evaį¹ assādaƱca assādato, ādÄ«navaƱca ādÄ«navato, nissaraį¹‡aƱca nissaraį¹‡ato yathābhÅ«taį¹ abbhaƱƱāsiį¹, athāhaį¹, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡iyā pajāya sadevamanussāya ā€˜anuttaraį¹ sammāsambodhiį¹ abhisambuddhoā€™ti paccaƱƱāsiį¹. But when I did truly understand these six interior sense fieldsā€™ gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I announced my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.

Ƒāį¹‡aƱca pana me dassanaį¹ udapādi: Knowledge and vision arose in me:

ā€˜akuppā me vimutti, ayamantimā jāti, natthi dāni punabbhavoā€™ā€ti. ā€˜My freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now thereā€™ll be no more future lives.ā€™ā€

Paį¹hamaį¹.
