Paį¹­hamanoceassādasutta If There Were No Gratification (Interior)

ā€œNo cedaį¹, bhikkhave, cakkhussa assādo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā cakkhusmiį¹ sārajjeyyuį¹. ā€œMendicants, if there were no gratification in the eye, sentient beings wouldnā€™t be aroused by it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi cakkhussa assādo tasmā sattā cakkhusmiį¹ sārajjanti. But since there is gratification in the eye, sentient beings are aroused by it.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, cakkhussa ādÄ«navo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā cakkhusmiį¹ nibbindeyyuį¹. If the eye had no drawback, sentient beings wouldnā€™t grow disillusioned with it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi cakkhussa ādÄ«navo tasmā sattā cakkhusmiį¹ nibbindanti. But since the eye has a drawback, sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, cakkhussa nissaraį¹‡aį¹ abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā cakkhusmā nissareyyuį¹. If there were no escape from the eye, sentient beings wouldnā€™t escape from it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi cakkhussa nissaraį¹‡aį¹ tasmā sattā cakkhusmā nissaranti. But since there is an escape from the eye, sentient beings do escape from it.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, sotassa assādo abhavissa ā€¦ If there were no gratification in the ear ā€¦

no cedaį¹, bhikkhave, ghānassa assādo abhavissa ā€¦ nose ā€¦

no cedaį¹, bhikkhave, jivhāya assādo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā jivhāya sārajjeyyuį¹. tongue ā€¦

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi jivhāya assādo, tasmā sattā jivhāya sārajjanti.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, jivhāya ādÄ«navo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā jivhāya nibbindeyyuį¹.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi jivhāya ādīnavo, tasmā sattā jivhāya nibbindanti.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, jivhāya nissaraį¹‡aį¹ abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā jivhāya nissareyyuį¹.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi jivhāya nissaraį¹‡aį¹, tasmā sattā jivhāya nissaranti.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, kāyassa assādo abhavissa ā€¦ body ā€¦

no cedaį¹, bhikkhave, manassa assādo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā manasmiį¹ sārajjeyyuį¹. mind, sentient beings wouldnā€™t be aroused by it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi manassa assādo, tasmā sattā manasmiį¹ sārajjanti. But since there is gratification in the mind, sentient beings are aroused by it.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, manassa ādÄ«navo abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā manasmiį¹ nibbindeyyuį¹. If the mind had no drawback, sentient beings wouldnā€™t grow disillusioned with it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi manassa ādÄ«navo, tasmā sattā manasmiį¹ nibbindanti. But since the mind has a drawback, sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it.

No cedaį¹, bhikkhave, manassa nissaraį¹‡aį¹ abhavissa, nayidaį¹ sattā manasmā nissareyyuį¹. If there were no escape from the mind, sentient beings wouldnā€™t escape from it.

Yasmā ca kho, bhikkhave, atthi manassa nissaraį¹‡aį¹, tasmā sattā manasmā nissaranti. But since there is an escape from the mind, sentient beings do escape from it.

YāvakÄ«vaƱca, bhikkhave, sattā imesaį¹ channaį¹ ajjhattikānaį¹ āyatanānaį¹ assādaƱca assādato, ādÄ«navaƱca ādÄ«navato, nissaraį¹‡aƱca nissaraį¹‡ato yathābhÅ«taį¹ nābbhaƱƱaį¹su, neva tāva, bhikkhave, sattā sadevakā lokā samārakā sabrahmakā sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡iyā pajāya sadevamanussāya nissaį¹­Ä visaƱƱuttā vippamuttā vimariyādÄ«katena cetasā vihariį¹su. As long as sentient beings donā€™t truly understand these six interior sense fieldsā€™ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, they havenā€™t escaped from this worldā€”with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humansā€”and they donā€™t live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.

Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, sattā imesaį¹ channaį¹ ajjhattikānaį¹ āyatanānaį¹ assādaƱca assādato, ādÄ«navaƱca ādÄ«navato, nissaraį¹‡aƱca nissaraį¹‡ato yathābhÅ«taį¹ abbhaƱƱaį¹su, atha, bhikkhave, sattā sadevakā lokā samārakā sabrahmakā sassamaį¹‡abrāhmaį¹‡iyā pajāya sadevamanussāya nissaį¹­Ä visaƱƱuttā vippamuttā vimariyādÄ«katena cetasā viharantÄ«ā€ti. But when sentient beings truly understand these six interior sense fieldsā€™ gratification, drawback, and escape for what they are, theyā€™ve escaped from this worldā€”with its gods, Māras, and Divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humansā€”and they live detached, liberated, with a mind free of limits.ā€
