Sāvatthinidānaį¹. At SāvatthÄ«.

Atha kho āyasmā migajālo yena bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ Then Venerable Migajāla went up to the Buddha ā€¦

ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā migajālo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and said to him:

ā€œā€˜ekavihārÄ«, ekavihārÄ«ā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of one who lives alone.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ekavihārÄ« hoti, kittāvatā ca pana sadutiyavihārÄ« hotÄ«ā€ti? How is one who lives alone defined? And how is living with a partner defined?ā€

ā€œSanti kho, migajāla, cakkhuviƱƱeyyā rÅ«pā iį¹­į¹­hā kantā manāpā piyarÅ«pā kāmÅ«pasaį¹hitā rajanÄ«yā. ā€œMigajāla, there are sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

TaƱce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. If a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them,

Tassa taį¹ abhinandato abhivadato ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hato uppajjati nandÄ«. this gives rise to relishing.

Nandiyā sati sārāgo hoti; When thereā€™s relishing thereā€™s lust.

sārāge sati saį¹yogo hoti. When thereā€™s lust there is yoking.

Nandisaį¹yojanasaį¹yutto kho, migajāla, bhikkhu sadutiyavihārÄ«ti vuccati. A mendicant who is fettered by relishing is said to live with a partner.

ā€¦peā€¦ There are sounds ā€¦ smells ā€¦ tastes ā€¦ touches ā€¦

Santi kho, migajāla, jivhāviƱƱeyyā rasā iį¹­į¹­hā kantā manāpā piyarÅ«pā kāmÅ«pasaį¹hitā rajanÄ«yā. There are ideas known by the mind, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

TaƱce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hati. If a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them,

Tassa taį¹ abhinandato abhivadato ajjhosāya tiį¹­į¹­hato uppajjati nandÄ«. this gives rise to relishing.

Evaį¹vihārÄ« ca, migajāla, bhikkhu kiƱcāpi araƱƱavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paį¹­isevati appasaddāni appanigghosāni vijanavātāni manussarāhasseyyakāni paį¹­isallānasāruppāni; A mendicant who lives like this is said to live with a partner, even if they frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest that are quiet and still, far from the madding crowd, remote from human settlements, and fit for retreat.

atha kho sadutiyavihārīti vuccati.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Taį¹‡hā hissa dutiyā, sāssa appahÄ«nā. For craving is their partner, and they havenā€™t given it up.

Tasmā ā€˜sadutiyavihārÄ«ā€™ti vuccati. Thatā€™s why theyā€™re said to live with a partner.

A mendicant who lives like this is said to live alone, even if they live within a village crowded by monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen; by rulers and their chief ministers, and monastics of other religions and their disciples.

Atha kho ekavihārīti vuccati.

Taį¹ kissa hetu? Why is that?

Taį¹‡hā hissa dutiyā, sāssa pahÄ«nā. For craving is their partner, and they have given it up.

Tasmā ā€˜ekavihārÄ«ā€™ti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s why theyā€™re said to live alone.ā€
