Dutiyachaphassāyatanasutta Six Fields of Contact (2nd)

ā€œYo hi koci, bhikkhave, bhikkhu channaį¹ phassāyatanānaį¹ samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraį¹‡aƱca yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāti. ā€œMendicants, anyone who doesnā€™t truly understand the six fields of contactā€™s origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape

Avusitaį¹ tena brahmacariyaį¹, ārakā so imasmā dhammavinayāā€ti. has not completed the spiritual journey and is far from this teaching and training.ā€

Evaį¹ vutte, aƱƱataro bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: When he said this, one of the mendicants said to the Buddha,

ā€œetthāhaį¹, bhante, anassasaį¹ panassasaį¹. ā€œHere, sir, Iā€™m lost, truly lost.

AhaƱhi, bhante, channaį¹ phassāyatanānaį¹ samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraį¹‡aƱca yathābhÅ«taį¹ nappajānāmÄ«ā€ti. For I donā€™t truly understand the six fields of contactā€™s origin, ending, gratification, drawback, and escape.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, bhikkhu, ā€œWhat do you think, mendicant?

cakkhuį¹ ā€˜netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attāā€™ti samanupassasÄ«ā€ti? Do you regard the eye like this: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my selfā€™?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œSādhu, bhikkhu, ettha ca te, bhikkhu, cakkhu ā€˜netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi na meso attāā€™ti evametaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya sudiį¹­į¹­haį¹ bhavissati. ā€œGood, mendicant! And regarding the eye, you will truly see clearly with right wisdom that: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.ā€™

Evaį¹ te etaį¹ paį¹­hamaį¹ phassāyatanaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ bhavissati āyatiį¹ apunabbhavāya ā€¦peā€¦. In this way you will give up the first field of contact, so that there are no more future lives.

ā€œJivhaį¹ ā€˜netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attāā€™ti samanupassasÄ«ā€ti? Do you regard the ear ā€¦ nose ā€¦ tongue ā€¦ body ā€¦

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€.

ā€œSādhu, bhikkhu, ettha ca te, bhikkhu, jivhā ā€˜netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi na meso attāā€™ti evametaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya sudiį¹­į¹­haį¹ bhavissati. Evaį¹ te etaį¹ catutthaį¹ phassāyatanaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ bhavissati āyatiį¹ apunabbhavāya ā€¦peā€¦.

ā€œManaį¹ ā€˜netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attāā€™ti samanupassasÄ«ā€ti? Do you regard the mind like this: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my selfā€™?ā€

ā€œEvaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œYes, sir.ā€

ā€œSādhu, bhikkhu, ettha ca te, bhikkhu, mano ā€˜netaį¹ mama, nesohamasmi, na meso attāā€™ti evametaį¹ yathābhÅ«taį¹ sammappaƱƱāya sudiį¹­į¹­haį¹ bhavissati. ā€œGood, mendicant! And regarding the mind, you will truly see clearly with right wisdom that: ā€˜This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.ā€™

Evaį¹ te etaį¹ chaį¹­į¹­haį¹ phassāyatanaį¹ pahÄ«naį¹ bhavissati āyatiį¹ apunabbhavāyāā€ti. In this way you will give up the sixth field of contact, so that there are no more future lives.ā€
