Paį¹­hamaavijjāpahānasutta Giving Up Ignorance (1st)

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā€¦

ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: and said to him:

ā€œatthi nu kho, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œSir, is there one thing such that by giving it up a mendicant gives up ignorance and gives rise to knowledge?ā€

ā€œAtthi kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThere is, mendicant.ā€

ā€œKatamo pana, bhante, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut what is that one thing?ā€

ā€œAvijjā kho, bhikkhu, eko dhammo yassa pahānā bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. ā€œIgnorance is one thing such that by giving it up a mendicant gives up ignorance and gives rise to knowledge.ā€

ā€œKathaį¹ pana, bhante, jānato, kathaį¹ passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti? ā€œBut how does a mendicant know and see so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge?ā€

ā€œCakkhuį¹ kho, bhikkhu, aniccato jānato passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjati. RÅ«pe ā€¦ cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦ cakkhusamphassaį¹ ā€¦ ā€œWhen a mendicant knows and sees the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact as impermanent, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises.

yampidaį¹, cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi aniccato jānato passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjati ā€¦peā€¦ And also knowing and seeing the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact as impermanent, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises. ā€¦

manaį¹ aniccato jānato passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjati. Dhamme ā€¦ manoviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦ manosamphassaį¹ ā€¦ Knowing and seeing the mind, ideas, mind consciousness, and mind contact as impermanent, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises.

yampidaį¹ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi aniccato jānato passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjati. And also knowing and seeing the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact as impermanent, ignorance is given up and knowledge arises.

Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, jānato evaį¹ passato bhikkhuno avijjā pahÄ«yati, vijjā uppajjatÄ«ā€ti. Thatā€™s how a mendicant knows and sees so as to give up ignorance and give rise to knowledge.ā€
