Atha kho sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su ā¦peā¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: Then several mendicants went up to the Buddha ā¦ and asked him,
āidha no, bhante, aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ amhe evaį¹ pucchanti: āSir, sometimes wanderers of other religions ask us:
ākimatthiyaį¹, Ävuso, samaį¹e gotame brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti? āReverends, whatās the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the ascetic Gotama?ā
Evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ mayaį¹, bhante, tesaį¹ aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ evaį¹ byÄkaroma: We answer them like this:
ādukkhassa kho, Ävuso, pariƱƱatthaį¹ bhagavati brahmacariyaį¹ vussatÄ«āti. āThe purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha is to completely understand suffering.ā
Kacci mayaį¹, bhante, evaį¹ puį¹į¹hÄ evaį¹ byÄkaramÄnÄ vuttavÄdino ceva bhagavato homa, na ca bhagavantaį¹ abhÅ«tena abbhÄcikkhÄma, dhammassa cÄnudhammaį¹ byÄkaroma, na ca koci sahadhammiko vÄdÄnuvÄdo gÄrayhaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ ÄgacchatÄ«āti? Answering this way, we trust that we repeat what the Buddha has said, and donāt misrepresent him with an untruth. We trust our explanation is in line with the teaching, and that there are no legitimate grounds for rebuttal or criticism.ā

yampidaį¹ manosamphassapaccayÄ uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vÄ dukkhaį¹ vÄ adukkhamasukhaį¹ vÄ tampi dukkhaį¹. The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is also suffering.
