LokapaƱhāsutta A Question On the World

Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha ā€¦ and said to him:

ā€œā€˜Loko, lokoā€™ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of this thing called ā€˜the worldā€™.

Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, lokoti vuccatÄ«ā€ti? How is the world defined?ā€

ā€œā€˜LujjatÄ«ā€™ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā lokoti vuccati. ā€œIt wears away, mendicant, thatā€™s why itā€™s called ā€˜the worldā€™.

KiƱca lujjati? And what is wearing away?

Cakkhu kho, bhikkhu, lujjati. The eye is wearing away.

RÅ«pā lujjanti, cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ lujjati, cakkhusamphasso lujjati, yampidaį¹ cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi lujjati ā€¦peā€¦ Sights ā€¦ eye consciousness ā€¦ eye contact is wearing away. The painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact is also wearing away.

jivhā lujjati ā€¦peā€¦ The ear ā€¦ nose ā€¦ tongue ā€¦ body ā€¦

mano lujjati, dhammā lujjanti, manoviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ lujjati, manosamphasso lujjati, yampidaį¹ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi lujjati. The mind ā€¦ ideas ā€¦ mind consciousness ā€¦ mind contact is wearing away. The painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is also wearing away.

LujjatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā lokoti vuccatÄ«ā€ti. It wears away, mendicant, thatā€™s why itā€™s called ā€˜the worldā€™.ā€
