Bāhiyasutta With Bāhiya

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami ā€¦peā€¦ ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho āyasmā bāhiyo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Bāhiya went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

ā€œsādhu me, bhante, bhagavā saį¹…khittena dhammaį¹ desetu, yamahaį¹ bhagavato dhammaį¹ sutvā eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto vihareyyanā€ti. ā€œSir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When Iā€™ve heard it, Iā€™ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.ā€

ā€œTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱasi, bāhiya, ā€œWhat do you think, Bāhiya?

cakkhu niccaį¹ vā aniccaį¹ vāā€ti? Is the eye permanent or impermanent?ā€

ā€œAniccaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ panāniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ vā taį¹ sukhaį¹ vāā€ti? ā€œBut if itā€™s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?ā€

ā€œDukkhaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œSuffering, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ panāniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ vipariį¹‡Ämadhammaį¹, kallaį¹ nu taį¹ samanupassituį¹: ā€œBut if itā€™s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus:

ā€˜etaį¹ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attāā€™ā€ti? ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my selfā€™?ā€

ā€œNo hetaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œNo, sir.ā€

ā€œRÅ«pā niccā vā aniccā vāā€ti? ā€œAre sights ā€¦

ā€œAniccā, bhanteā€ ā€¦peā€¦

cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹ ā€¦peā€¦ eye consciousness ā€¦

cakkhusamphasso ā€¦peā€¦ eye contact ā€¦

yampidaį¹ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tampi niccaį¹ vā aniccaį¹ vāā€ti? The pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact: is that permanent or impermanent?ā€

ā€œAniccaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ panāniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ vā taį¹ sukhaį¹ vāā€ti? ā€œBut if itā€™s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?ā€

ā€œDukkhaį¹, bhanteā€. ā€œSuffering, sir.ā€

ā€œYaį¹ panāniccaį¹ dukkhaį¹ vipariį¹‡Ämadhammaį¹, kallaį¹ nu taį¹ samanupassituį¹: ā€œBut if itā€™s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus:

ā€œEvaį¹ passaį¹, bāhiya, sutavā ariyasāvako cakkhusmimpi nibbindati, rÅ«pesupi nibbindati, cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡epi nibbindati, cakkhusamphassepi nibbindati ā€¦peā€¦ ā€œSeeing this, a learned noble disciple grows disillusioned with the eye, sights, eye consciousness, and eye contact. And they grow disillusioned with the painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by eye contact.

yampidaį¹ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaį¹ sukhaį¹ vā dukkhaį¹ vā adukkhamasukhaį¹ vā tasmimpi nibbindati. They grow disillusioned with the ear ā€¦ nose ā€¦ tongue ā€¦ body ā€¦ mind ā€¦ painful, pleasant, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact.

Nibbindaį¹ virajjati; virāgā vimuccati; vimuttasmiį¹ vimuttamiti Ʊāį¹‡aį¹ hoti. Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away theyā€™re freed. When theyā€™re freed, they know theyā€™re freed.

ā€˜KhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€™ti pajānātÄ«ā€ti. They understand: ā€˜Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā€™ā€

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo bhagavato bhāsitaį¹ abhinanditvā anumoditvā uį¹­į¹­hāyāsanā bhagavantaį¹ abhivādetvā padakkhiį¹‡aį¹ katvā pakkāmi. And then Venerable Bāhiya approved and agreed with what the Buddha said. He got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

Atha kho āyasmā bāhiyo eko vÅ«pakaį¹­į¹­ho appamatto ātāpÄ« pahitatto viharanto nacirassevaā€”yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaį¹ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraį¹ā€”brahmacariyapariyosānaį¹ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi. Then Bāhiya, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

ā€œKhÄ«į¹‡Ä jāti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹‡Ä«yaį¹, nāparaį¹ itthattāyāā€ti abbhaƱƱāsi. He understood: ā€œRebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is nothing further for this place.ā€

AƱƱataro ca panāyasmā bāhiyo arahataį¹ ahosÄ«ti. And Venerable Bāhiya became one of the perfected.
