Dukkhasamudayasutta The Origin of Suffering

ā€œDukkhassa, bhikkhave, samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca desessāmi. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the origin and ending of suffering.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo? And what, mendicants, is the origin of suffering?

CakkhuƱca paį¹­icca rÅ«pe ca uppajjati cakkhuviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso. Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; Contact is a condition for feeling.

vedanāpaccayā taį¹‡hā. Feeling is a condition for craving.

Ayaį¹ dukkhassa samudayo ā€¦peā€¦ This is the origin of suffering ā€¦

jivhaƱca paį¹­icca rase ca uppajjati jivhāviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso.

Phassapaccayā vedanā;

vedanāpaccayā taį¹‡hā.

Ayaį¹ dukkhassa samudayo ā€¦peā€¦ manaƱca paį¹­icca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviƱƱāį¹‡aį¹. Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas.

Tiį¹‡į¹‡aį¹ saį¹…gati phasso. The meeting of the three is contact.

Phassapaccayā vedanā; Contact is a condition for feeling.

vedanāpaccayā taį¹‡hā. Feeling is a condition for craving.

Ayaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, dukkhassa samudayo. This is the origin of suffering.

Tassāyeva taį¹‡hāya asesavirāganirodhā upādānanirodho; When that craving fades away and ceases with nothing left over, grasping ceases.

upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho; When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases.

bhavanirodhā jātinirodho; When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases.

jātinirodhā jarāmaraį¹‡aį¹ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti. When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.

Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

Ayaį¹ dukkhassa atthaį¹…gamo ā€¦peā€¦ This is the ending of suffering. ā€¦
